Deltablade
I'm entertaining the thought of putting some 6x9 in speakers in my rear deck, which from what I understand, can be done with minor modification to the actual deck. However, I have come to realize that the current speaker grilles would not completely cover these new, larger speakers. I do not want to leave the speakers exposed. Where can I get some speaker grilles that would cover the 6x9s?
wattsat
I was contemplating this myself. Here are my thoughts. A 6x9 will fit in the current factory hole without any modification to the back deck. (Unless you are putting in super massive 6x9's) In order for them to look good the best optoin will be to make a new enclosure for the speakers and cover it in grill cloth that is the same color as your back deck. This will make it look as close to factory as possible.I am thinking that the enclosure will need to be made of two pieces. A bottom piece that will support the speaker and allow for mounting to the deck in the factory location. Then a top piece that will cover up the speaker and match the rear deck. I wish I had a drawing or picture to illistrate what I am thinking.Does that help?
Deltablade
I think I understand the first part of the enclosure you described, kind of a cradle for the speaker to sit in, fastened by screws to that peice of something, maybe a thin piece of particleboard or something. And then you screw that into the current holes in the deck. I am confused about the part that will go over it. And just by chance, do you know how to remove those stock grilles? Is it that big bolt in the trunk?
wattsat
I have not taken them completely apart, but the factory setup is very simular to what I described. There are 4 nuts that hold the speaker enclosure in place. Once you remove those, the speaker enclosure will come out. From there, there are 4 small torx screws that hold the two halves of the enclosure together. I have not taken the time to go that far, but I assume that once those 4 screwes are removed you will have full access to the 5x7.
Deltablade
As for making your own enclosure, what do you think would be easiest as far as materials go?Bing, can you help us?
850 Stylzz
Id go with the Infinity reference 5x7. They fit right into the old housing and sound great. Plenty of bass. I did and am happy.
Deltablade
Yeah, maybe I'll just give in to the convenience.
Bing_0
c/mon, you should know better than to ask me about rear deck speakers.but seriously, i do hate rear deck spaakers, for many reasons...no sound should be coming from behind your head, and they block a potential pass through for the sub, and if you have a powerful enough sub, you can acutally drive the rear deck speaker into overload and make far noises since i dont have a 854, i am not sure waht it looks like exactly down there, but know this, most 6x9s will acutally prefer a freeair, if you trap them into some kind of enclosure, you may be getting nasty resonsnace issues...b
Deltablade
I just want some larger drivers cause I don't have a sub and don't plan on getting one.
wattsat
I just want some larger drivers cause I don't have a sub and don't plan on getting one.Are you going to have an Amp, or just use the HU power?
Deltablade
Just the stock HU. I want to replace the rear deck speakers for a little bass, replace the front door speakers with some infinity reference coaxials and disconect the 3.5s in the dash. wattsat
Don't be surprised when you replace the rear deck speakers if you actually have less Bass than before.Factory speakers will produce more "Bass" at lower levels than a comparable aftermarket speaker. However, they will distort more quickly and not play as loud. To achieve the same level of Bass as the factory makes, you will have to turn your volume higher and at that point the HU will probably be distorting before you reach the amount of Bass you desire. Also, note that they are 8ohm speakers and not the Typical 4ohm.If you install 4ohm speakers and you are using the factory HU you may damage or break your HU.Everything I have witnessed for these speakers indicates that the Rears (Deck and Door) are all 8ohm speakers, wired in Parallel. This will make the HU see the correct 4ohm load.It is very doubtful that you will be able to find 8ohm 5x7 car speakers.Unless your rear deck speakers are blown or you will also be installing an amp, I would not replace them.If you do replace them, I would advise to disconnect the rear door speakers so the HU will see the proper Ohm load and not self destruct. You will not be able to achieve good sound in any car just by replacing the factory speakers and using only the Factory HU power. Guest Guest_Deltablade
So if I disconnect the dash speakers and the rear door speakers then install some new coaxials (4 ohm) in the front doors and some new 5x7s (4 ohm) in the rear deck, the hu wouldn't fry? ABARTH965ss
I just finished putting in new speakers all round in my 96 850. sounds darn good now... Pioneer head unit, 5.25" in the front doors, 6 1/2" rear doors (don't ask why, but they work nicely), and 6x9" rear deck speakers.. i found that it was best to keep the stock speaker base, take off the cover, and leave the speakers open (my Pioneer speakers have a plastic grill-esque cover anyway). I've got Rockford Fosgates in the dash, and everything works fine. I'm going to put in amps and a sub (Pioneer also), and then unleash my music on the world. okay, maybe just my neighbors..
