Sure that Boeing isnt causing a shortage?

http://www.compositesworld.com/hpc/issues/2004/March/376/1

There are other companies as well but for the US its mostly Boeing. The new Boeing 787 is 60% composite materials.

That story is almost 3 years old. Two new plants have come on-line since then. There really is not a shortage per-se. Its more like a price increase thats forcing some people to call it s shortage. I liken it to calling this a fuel shortage. Notice F1, WRC, GT, basically no one else is having problems getting material. On that note I just got 50 yards last week ;)

Most of that story still holds true today. Boeing and Airbus are kicking up the demand with their new commercial aircraft and the military is using a good amount of CF in their aircraft as well. Its not a shortage for them but for the small business it is. Prices have gone up and the wait time for the small company is increased. I dont know how long you waited for the CF but this is just what Ive read.

How much did those 50 run ya?

What resin do you use?

1800 and some change.

Depends what I am doing RE resin. Usually plain expoxy. If I am not going to paint it thogh I go with the west ultra clear epoxy hardener. I think its 105 or 107. Its been a while since I did any parts that did not see paint.

Are you using a facility of your own or someone elses? I've had issues with bubbling epoxy over material and I've been told that there are vacuum setups to relieve this.

Vaccum work well but an easier trick for a pinch is just CO2. CO2 will bring everything to the top. So maybe a little porus, but sanding will fix it. Also hotpot your resin or cure a little higher. I usually cure at about 160

Now if only we all could work for the government....

I still wish you would make us all some CF over fiberglass hoods, and not say they would cost 2k$. I bet they would still end up being to expensive for us anyway.

I'll do solid graphite or kevlar. Glass pisses me off and it too hard to clean up

I'd take one shit it would probably be easier than getting a CF hood made. On that note, the Carerra GT, C6 Z06, Ford GT, McLaren, Bugatti, BMW, and the Ferrari Enzo are all using lots of CF. As well as many sports goods manufacturers. Hell the other day I saw 10 surfboards made of Carbon fiber. :)

FYI graphite is carbon fiber

I haven't seen the price of a pencil go up very much lately  LOLerbomb. So you would do a CF one, but it would be like the rediculous expensive right? Unfortunatley I can't afford 2k$ for a hood.

Yeah thats why I never bother to make anything. Everyone is fine with 800-1000 for a fake one, but 2k for a real one is out.

Put your epoxy in a vacuum chamber prior to molding, pulls all the air out of the mixture after stirring.
