Frustrating Install Problem

Alright, it's a bit of a long read, but I want to try and explain everything completely

The Car: 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage

The System

Head Unit: Eclipse CD5000

Speakers (front and rear): Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 components

4channel: Kicker KX650.4

Sub Amp: Kicker SX1250.1

Subs: 2x Kicker L5

Wiring: 0ga +10farad capacitor

ok, and the problem...

The 4channel will cut out at high volume the protect light will come on and the amp will fully turn off for about a second and then come back on and within a few seconds turn right back off. The red light on the amp will also dim a bit with the music before turning off. The sub amp (SX1250.1) stays on rock solid, absolutely no dimming or cutting out at any volume.

Things I've tried to fix it. Ran new RCA's/power wires. Tried various Head Units, from 4 different Alpines, and a couple different Eclipse units. I've also tried the new model year of Kicker 650.4. I've also tried different speakers and it cuts out with those as well. Grounds have all been beefed up all around, amp to chassis and chassis to battery. Tried various grounding points. Literally everything has been redone and it still has the problem. I did try my next largest amp I had access to, a Kicker EA4000 which is 75x4, but it drove into distortion before I could reach the volume level of the kicker, however it did not cut out.

With that all said I am stumped, I have tried virtually everything and I got nothing else to try, has anyone encountered a problem like this?

I know it's not the amp, I think we determined today that it's the car and it's charging system and battery. I hooked up a 100amp continuous power supply to the 4 channel and it got rediculous loud before cutting out (I'm talking I couldn't sit in the car at that volume)

The 650.4 has a listed voltage of 14.4 so you're probably right w/ the charging system. Do you have any DMM readings on the line voltage? the amp is stable to 2 ohms x 4, so it wouldn't be the speakers. The specs say it's fan-cooled, but from the pictures it doesn't look like it can dissipate much heat. Is it possible it's getting hot from lower voltage and just overheating? Test tracks + an o-scope might come in handy to see how much the voltage is changing here, too.

seems wierd that it would be the charging system since the sub amp should also cut out if the voltage is dropping that low. If the amp requires a constant 14v then your only option would be to install that amp in a large truck with 2 batteries :)

does the amp get rediculiously hot to the touch after it cuts out, or is it still cool? I'd try swapping it with another of the same amp if you havn't already, or maybe try disconnection one pair of speakers and see if it still cuts out. these are all basic troubleshooting techniques though, so you may have tried them already.

I had this same problem last week and it turned out the be a bad amplifier. I doubt the HU would have any effect on the amp turning on or off unless your remote turn on is grounding or something, but that wouldn't cause the amp to go into protection. Does it cut out if you turn the gains down on both channels and crank it? just a few things off the top of my head

*EDIT* Just had another thought, did you try disconnecting the sub amp and leaving the 4CH hooked up and see if it still cuts out? If it doesn't then i'd say you are on the right track by looking at the power system. If it still cuts out though, I'd have to point a finger at the amp or you speaker wiring. Do all of your compents Ohm out to the same amount, if they don't you may also have a bad crossover or one of you tweeter wires is being pinched. I had a car do the same thing a while back with a 4CH, you could listen at normal volume but once you turned it up it would cut out. It turned out that inside one of the tweeter cups someone had pinched the wire against the mounting screw, and it would only cut out when you went to turn it up.

It may be possible that your overall impedence is off. When you wired the L5's did you take one short wire and connect it + to - and then run from the amp to the same + and - if not then you cound be pulling to hard on the amp yes the amp is 2 Ohm stable but are you running the speaker in a 2 Ohm configuration? That is the question

the 4-channel is turning off, not the amp powering the woofers. I still think it is like 1 stand of wire that only grounds out when the volume is turned up. Judging by the age of the original post though, i'd say he got it fixed already, i just wish he'd tell me what it was!
