just had to say it...haha

mrwinkey is right...alot of people dont understand what they do when you go for the emission test, and laws are different state to state.

Volvo has always had a bad history when it comes to passing the monitor's...even when your car does not have a problem. you need to drive it in the right sequence. If not you will never pass.

Thank you for your mechanic opinion...Do you even own a S40?

Or do you copy and paste from internet source about diagnosting a car. I know Volvo have a bullentin about certain drive cycle to pass emission test but let me ask you how many Volvo owner had to go through this process? If this is what require in order to pass emission, I'll probally wont buy another Volvo ever again.

God, I just love when some newbie come along and act like they know it all and pretend to be someone cool

Maybe yall should move your little 'who has the bigger... brain' dispute to the PMs. Amy received the information she was looking for and is quite happy from what I gather. The the two of you are continuing on for no purpose, and it's annoying me.

Jena,

I"m not sure who trying to bash our forum...just b/c we dont' have 5cyl engine doesn't meant we dont' deserve any respect from fellow Volvo owners.

I"m sorry for another member remark but you can see that I was trying to help her in the thread also until someone start thinking they're the mechanic and almighty knowledge on Volvo.

For garbergtsi, just b/c you work on some S40 doesn't meant you know EVERYTHING about S40. I'm sure we got more than a few members know the inside and out of S40. I'm don't want to this thread about VS vs us but seems like member on here act as they knows it all b/c they have work on some S40.

I don't believe the way someone else types on forum has any reflection on you or how big your brain is, and who cares if they type as if they know it all. It's the internet, where voices aren't heard, expressions are non-existant... and every man hung like a horse.

Perhaps you should worry less about the disrespect you think you get from some one you don't know, and who doesn't know you. My opinion.

But... if you are so set on receiving your respect via internet... then you should try remember, that it's not the action of others, but our own actions that bring respect. I don't see how you calling someone "one of the dumbest bichez out there" could warrant any kind of respectable admiration from your "fellow Volvo owners." I could be wrong of course... there could very well indeed be plenty of people patting you on the back and saying "Good job dude you told that chic."

It wasn't me said that line as that why I apologize for another member for the remark. Point well taken B)

  • 3 weeks later...

Just to give a quick update.

As a double-check, I took the car to AutoZone and had them check the codes. As expected, there were no bad codes stored in the car.

I drove the drive cycle about 8 times while on vacation. Four times on the way up to Canada, and another four times up in Canada.

A week later, after my return, I took the car to the Gas station to get the emissions checked, and AGAIN, my car is not ready for emissions. The car failed readiness test on components. ARRGGGHHH! ! ! Frustrating!

So, on Monday I have an appointment with the dealer to do the drive cycle. They will give me an emissions sticker and then I have to go back to the Gas station for inspection sticker.

Next year, I will not have this problem again. Do you know anybody interested in buying a used 2000 Volvo S40? I'm willing to sell for a good price.

Thanks. I think we're getting somewhere now.

Yes, it was failing on components -- I saw the computer at the gas station. In Feb 2006, the check engine light went on, and the dealership replaced the thermostat and sensor. They are saying that this is why the the car needs to have the readiness reset. Yes, they want to charge me $150 to do this drive cycle -- which is the reason I am posting on this board! Of course, they will not tell me what the drive cycle is, but they said that this is very specific and trickly for 2000 S40's. I am going under the assumption that if I can take it through the drive cycle myself, and that normal driving did not reset this automatically. If this doesn't work, then I'll have to "suffer the consequences".

We're on to something now that you have offered a drive sequence. I have some questions:

* "start the car DEAD COLD" - I live 6 miles from the highway. Should I park my car closer to the highway overnight so I can start dead cold? (I guess I can ride my bike back and forth to do this).

* "just to be safe I would say do it again one more" - Does the car need to start from a DEAD COLD again?

* When going through this drive procedure, can I pull off the highway exit ramp, turn around, and then drive more? Or do I need to find 18 miles of straight highway? When in this recipe is it save to turn around? After the idle cycle and before the next drive cycle?

* I have also found the following similar procedure on another message board regarding a Volvo 850. Their procedure is similar to yours, except that they drive the car 6 min, 5 min, 4 min. Is this significant?

If you are having trouble getting your 850 through state emissions test and the source of

your frustration is ‘readiness’ codes that aren’t set, the following procedure from Volvo

will help set the readiness codes.

Start with the vehicle cool, below 122 degrees F.

Turn off the air conditioning.

Select a location where the driving can be done without violating traffic laws and you can

stop safely at the side of the road.

1. Start the engine and accelerate to approximately 1500-2000 rpm.

2. Drive for 6 minutes at 1500-2000 rpm.

3. Stop the vehicle and remain at idle in drive for 70 seconds.

4. Accelerate to at least 45mph and drive for 5 minutes at 1800-2200 rpm.

5. Stop the vehicle and remain at idle in drive for 60 seconds.

6. Accelerate to at least 45 mph and drive for 4 minutes at 1800-2200 rpm.

7. Stop the vehicle and remain at idle in drive for 60 seconds.

8. Park the vehicle and turn off the engine.

This procedure must be performed TWICE from a cold start to set the readiness codes.

Hi,

I just went through this mess with our V70. They had me doing that procedure, which for me was completely useless. I took the car back to the dealer 3 times, each time they couldn't find anything wrong with it, yet it kept failing the readiness.

The forth time I took it in to the dealer, I ask that them to fix what ever it is and do the smog check at the dealer. After a week and a half they told me it was ready and I had a smog certificate. The problem they claim was a bad MAF cable connector.

Huuummm.....I just can't believe that!!! I would be willing to bet as previously stated that they are going to give you a waiver. That magic number of $150 to run a drive cycle just seems quite odd. If you ran to Canada from here armed with the drive cycle knowledge that you were given ( even without out that knowledge) and components is still not ready I'm gonna say that there is some kind of issue with-in the ECM programing wise(purley a guess) . I just cannot believe that it is not ready by now. I have never seen that on a 99 or newer car. Now if it was a 96 or 97 I would say possibly but not on a 2000. Good luck and post back if you get a waiver or if they actually hit the drive cycle(but I bet they don't get it ready either) ;)

In the end, I didn't get a waiver. The dealership gave me a sheet of paper that said passed readiness and passed emissions. The car had an extra 14.7 miles on the odometer. (Last year, they said that it was difficult to reset the computer, this year, it was easy).

Well, I guess I have no takers on this board interested in buying my 2000 S40. Makes sense to me. I think my next car will be a Suburu. I will not need to pay the extra $150 to reset this computer again next year!
