Phil94850
i recently purchased my first volvo and i love it... the prior owner gave me the remote for the keyless entry and ofcourse it doesnt work. i installed a new batt in the remote, done the turn off and on 5 times trick no luck. my understanding is the light on the dash should come on after turning the key on and off 5 times, then press the key on the remote to program. my dash light will not come on after the on and off thing.any ideas where to check... thanks for any help !!! Guest Guest_uncle Boost_*
Not sure if you have a wagon or not, but I had this same problem with my 94. Turned out to be the Tailgate lock wasn't in the correct position....The entire 1000 times I tried to program the remotes the tailgate was Locked..(I think)It didn't program sucessfully until I had ALL doors closed, and All Locks UNLOCKED. It took then. I was Happy as h3LL!....Try different Trunk / Tailgate lock positions. May seem like a farce but it worked for me.On my 96 855R I got 2 remotes with the car....Never could get them to program. Bought some remotes off ebay...Still no-Work-ski.....Took all the remotes to a Volvo Dealership and had'em tested...they ALL worked...Hmmmm....Bought a Brand Spanking New in the Box off Ebay from the UK ($42 US)....Programmed on the 1st attempt!Once again I was happy as a Pig in Sh!t.....Its Hit or miss with these things...Jus my 2ç
Guest AlvinL
Do you feel a soft 'click' when you press down on a button. It should. I find that after a while it gets gummed up inside switch. I've had success opening it up and using contact cleaner to clean the switch. I work the switch with the contact cleaner soaking on it until it's smooth and the 'click' is back. Weird.

Trunk too?If so, when you Unlock from the drivers door do all locks unlock including the trunk? Before you program, make sure all locks are "UNLOCKED".And like I mentioned before, I even had my remotes that came with the car tested at a Volvo Dealership by the Service manager and the little thing he tested it on worked on both Unlock and Lock (Leds on his test box showed they worked) But I never could get them to work with my car...Don't know why....Only after I bought a new one did it work. Maybe I will try them now since I have the new one actuating everything now....Check all your fuses too to make sure you don't have any blown fuses. Phil94850
uncle.. yeah the all doors and trunk lock and unlock when i use the key. i havent checked my fuses yet though. im gonna go to the dealer and have them check my remote. i took the remote apart and it looks good on the inside. i spoke to the service guy at the volvo dealer and he said its rare that the reciever go bad its usually the remote.like i mentioned before the only thing that concerns me is i cant get my led on the dash to come on like it should berore you can program. the guy at the dealer said some would and some wouldnt considering on how fast you turned the key the " 5 " times. im gonna pull the glove box and take a look at the reciever and make sure im getting 12v to it. i dont mean to be a bother i just hate to have something that wont work uncle... do u remeber if the led on your dash would light up when you programmed your remote ??thank you for everyones advice !!!! But yeah my led was working. And the funny thing about it was I was at work in the middle of the day when I programmed my 94 and could see the the led in broad daylight. Have Volvo try to program your car with a brand New remote. That way you'll know if its a remote problem or not. And like I mentioned before, ALL the remotes I had checked out Fine at the dealer.....But only the NEW one I got off ebay would make the car respond. (96 855R).The remotes I got for the 94 855 came off ebay too. They worked once I had the tailgate lock in the right spot.( 1 thing I didn't mention was like a couple of days before that I had to take my tailgate apart to lubricate the motorized lock mechanism because it wouldn't lock/unlock even with the key used in the drivers door despite the fact that the rest of the locks did) <---------- So once I got that working, I was able to make the programming work. Wierd but true. One note.....I remember there being like 5 or 6 wires going to the tailgate lock mechanism....It only takes 3 wires to lock and unlock a motorized DC motor to make it reverse direction etc. Those other wires have a purpose and My thinking is that it tells the Remote Receiver that All systems are "GO" back here..."Lock the rest of the car"
Guest AlvinL
how can i change the lock positions on my trunk. i have the central locking sys. so it controls everything ????The trunk has a 'valet' lock position. When in that postion, the power lock is bypassed and stays locked. You need the key to set/unset that 'valet' setting.

I remember that now!Valet mode....Thats probably why mine wouldn't program until I took it out of that mode. That explains it then...Seems like Volvos came with a Standard key, and a Valet Key (shorter key???) so that a valet could only accessthe ign and the doors but not the trunk correct?
