Any Thoughts Of Using The Spare Tire As Your Enclosure?

I don't remember ever seeing this but what are your thoughts on using the spare tire are your sub enclosure? That way you still get to keep your spare (fix a flat cans are out of the question). the Volvo OEM subwoofer for the P2 wagons are similar in theory but is free floating and uses the whole wheel well as an enclosure.

A lot of people have done this. You don't use the wheel as the enclosure, but rather fit the enclosure inside the wheel. For someone that needs to save space it can be a good way to go.

Yup, basically FG mold an enclosure to the shape of the inner spare tire dimensions. That way I could just pop out the enclosure and use the spare tire. Anyone on VS try this? I'd be interested to see a DIY on this (not necessarily for Volvos but in general). I couldn't find any links with a google search.

You don't need to use glass, wacky wood would do fine. That's how I built the portion of my enclosure that sits in the spare well. A couple other people here on VS have done it. I've seen someone here try to cut out 100 MDF rings and glue them all together, but I wouldn't recomend that. I forget how Bing did Steve's car, but there is a thread about it.

This type of install is done a lot in trucks/SUVs, that might clue you into where to look. It's fairly basic and can be done at home if you have the typical box building tools and skills.

try 4 8" subs in a custom box suspened from the bottom of the rear deck :D I havn't seen anyone do it yet on here, and it would be sweet if done correctly.

actually a kid from the Florida crew has done it.... Chase Voight's s40 has it with a plexiglass bottom mirrors and leds... it looks sick but it has been done.

ain't that a kick in the nuts  Well, it just proves this as a viable option for our type of cars. Got any pics of this guy's setup, i havn't heard a peep about it.

PERFECT!!! Exactly what I was looking for. How is the sound? How difficult was glassing the enclosure around the spare wheel? I would assume you did it off the car? How heavy is the whole thing? Is that MDF as a top sheet? I love the accents. Nice touch!

Soooooo...Here's the process. I first bought a 3 pack of 2" wide masking tape and layed about 120 yards in the rear cargo area over the spare and down into it. Basically made a form for the bottom shape of the box. Make sure there are no gaps in the tape cause resin is a real oh yeah!. I then used a plastic drop cloth to block off the rest of the car from fumes. Coated the tape in vasiline so the fiberglass releases. Then layed a layer of glass and let harden. Pulled the wholr thing and decided just to use the fiberglass part which sunk into the spare rim. I then liquid nailed and screwed it t o the base of the mdf board. The top piece or sub mounting was made from 2 rings(the bottom one w/ wavy edges) I then streached a t-shirt over the rings and resined it. Matting...bondo and a stuff-ton of sanding.
