Volvo Virgin
Feels like a bad u-joint or a bad ring & pinion in a RWD car.Just did the front, rear and side motor mounts on the bottom of the motor, and running the IPD solid urethane mount up top for the past 1.5 years. The clunking still persists after the new mounts. Most noticeable when not under hard throttle.Like after passing someone and coasting back into your lane, when the car shifts back into 4th it clunks hard. And tho I don't cruise like this normally,I can really notice it if I lock it out in first and drive at about 10-15mph transitioning in and out of the throttle.Could it be the transaxle itself?Other than that the trans shifts/runs great and the car only has 79K on it.Edit:auto trans BTW if it wasn't clear. rodrigo
I would start with a trans fluid flush...
MarcS
Where does the clunk sound like it is coming from? If you get it from 3/4 and can duplicate it in first I would think that the tranny flush wouldn't do much, however it can't hurt! An off the wall idea, sometimes a bad shock/strut can cause clunks at odd times.

Volvo Virgin
Thanks for the input guys.I've been chasin this problem for a while and did all the "normal" stuff first thinkin that would solve it.So far IPD solid upper mount, struts, strut mounts, end links, and most recently the front, back and side motor mounts. No clunking on start up like there was,and the mounts were def sagging, but the cluking between 3rd and 4th while under light to no throttle still significant.I was messing around with it again last night while I had a friend in the car,and it is actually making a popping type sound from somewhere up front when I lock it in first and get in and out of the throttle.Any other suggestions? theForgottenone
top strut mount or check rubber insulator on coil spring on the bottom against the strut seat tab. If the contact is metal to metal w/o the insulator, you'll get a clunk noise.
