Changes In 5 Speed Auto Transmissions Since 1999?

Can anyone fill me in on the evolution of the 5 speed auto's used in V70 (XC in particular, but should be the same) from introduction in 1999 through current? I have the impression that the early ones were Asin Warner products, while the latest (Geartronic) is a GM product, and that the transmission fluid requirements are different between them as well. Any insights, or thoughs about one vs the other (assuming that there are more than one)?

Thanks

I don't think the XC in 99 and 2000 had a 5sp. The Rs certainly did and I believe the non-Rs too. Rodrigo doesn't have one in his 2000 XC SE. Not sure of the brand to be honest.

I think the 5sp came out in 2000. Not before.

They are all Aisin Warner. The only CAR that used the GM crap was the 6cyl S-80s.. The 98 cars are like and 850 they use Dexron III the, 99 and up (4 or five speed) use the newer fluid..

Not sure of that...although the Mobil-3309 ATF apparently won't hurt a 4 speed, it is specifically designed for 5 speed A-W trannies according to their spec sheet. http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS...il_ATF_3309.asp

Aisin Warner sounds good to me. Are there both Geartronic and normal shifting Aisin Warner 5 speeds? My new owners manual (2007) shows pics of a standard full range auto shifter (PRND4342 I think) and separately shows the Geartronic (PRND only, with + - shifting to left), and notes "Option" on the Geartronic description, although it is the standard transmission in all '07 XC70's at least in the US, as far as I know.

A moderator shouldn't be wrong.

You are

4 speed trans are Dextron III. Only 5 speed autos made by Aisin Warner use JWS 3309 spec oil and that is Mobil 3309. Period.

Wow you have some stones calling out a guy who has been a tech for 15-20 years. I don't know about anyone else but I am not appriciating your attitude or your misuse of the word "your" in other threads.

Maybe you should take an English lesson,

Read what I wrote.

I said a Moderator shouldn't be giving out wrong info.

and then I said "you are"

As in "you are" wrong

Did you want me to say "your" wrong.

And he is wrong totally about what trans fluids to use.

Most "techs" on the subject of trans fluids are wrong. They only know what they overheard. I deal in facts and owners manuals and knowledge of fluids and transmission requirements. Prove me wrong. no one has and I am not alone. Get "your" facts straight (or should I say "you're" facts straight as in how you think it should be written).

Don't fight a battle when you are defenseless... and unarmed...

And as far as "your" english , why don't you start by learning how to spell "appreciating".

Why don't you check and see what 4 speed trans that Volvo had from 99 to 01 in the S80. If you do have the ability to check you would see that it was a 4 speed Cadillac GM trans that required and still does, Dextron III. All S80's and S60's and S40's from 02 on are Aisin Warner trans and require ONLY JWS 3309 oil specification type oils and that is Mobil 3309 or the rebadged Mobil 3309 Volvo fluid (I suppose the Tech calls that synthetic also which is totally wrong).

Sorry, I didn't mean to activate your "I am never wrong" complex.

You can start by admitting you know squat about what fluids go in transmissions. See your statement below. Totally inaccurate.

Oops a mistake. Something you would obviously know nothing about. I hope my sister can find a Mr. Perfect like yourself.

UHHH that was from DMelv a so called "tech" or a dealer employee probably in the service dept.

It's no argument. It's not a debate.

My view is totally supported on two other Volvo forums. This one doesn't quite get it. Misleading info on the correct fluids for the trans can toast one. Moderators should know their stuff before quoting it as gospel.

Ok, I gave you a peaceful warning about toning your attitude down, but you haven't... Take the night off, we will see you tomorrow if you want to come and correct us some more. Hell, with the way you're talking, maybe you will run the entire site tomorrow.
