kenk
I currently own a 1996 850 NA. 5 speed.Never had a problem with engine tempterature, it allways runs at 1/2 or a little over that about 190 farenheight or so. I was wondering though if i can reduce temperature and wear by installing a oil cooler from a turbo model? Im currently at 164k im aiming/ hoping for 400k at least, so i want to do what i can to make things last as long as possible. Are aftermarket coolers worse or better? There are models that relocate the oil filter, and then there are ones that just go inbetween the filter and car....I allready did the horn relocation bit...Thanks. DEWFPO
Are you running synthetic or dino oil? What change interval? With a NA car you shouldn't be stressing you oil too much unless you tow often or drag race with the car.If your concerned about oil breakdown due to high heat loads, a switch to synthetic would take care of that. James A Sousa
Even if the cooler adds more cooling capacity, won't your thermostat keep the operating temperature the same?Running your brick's engine at a lower temperature can cause difficulties with some of its systems - how does it affect fuel mixture and combustion? potroast
dunno about volvo specifically, but I know on my tacoma, swaping out the stock (180 degree) thermostat for a 170 degree thermostat dramatically improved performance. However, going to a 160 degree thermostat hurt it a little. After many tests, it has been determined that the 170 degree thermostat is best for the tacoma, and that the 160 would cause problems down the road.So the question here is whether the stock volvo thermostat is best, or if perhaps one or two steps cooler would be better? Only one way to find out!As for adding an aux cooler, it would not cause your temperature guage to read any different unless your engine was getting hot with the thermostat constantly open. However, your thermostat will open less frequently with an aux cooler.I do, however, highly recommend a tranny aux cooler!
patrick
850's are one of the worst cars for heat soak, my 850 is terrible, anyone know any company that sells a lower temp thermostat? Having the intake manifold RIGHT behind the radiator doesnt help too much, especially w/ that fan design. ITs obvious these cars are made for sweden. The transmission seems to easily get hot too, i too would say a trans cooler would be more effective than an oil cooler. i also agree on the fluids. potroast
you can get a new thermostat at NAPA, or any other parts shop, for that matter.
