Cd Changer For 1998 V70

Have a 1998 V70 with factory radio system that includes the operation for a "cd changer" but car came w/o the changer.

Would like to install an aftermarket changer. Assume the factory unit was installed in the cargo area. Is the wire cable already installed and accessable in the cargo area? Location?

What aftermarket changers will work with the Volvo radio system? Do I ned adaptors of some type to connect an aftermarket unit to the factory control/radio system?

Anything else I need to consider?

Does anyone know of a Volvo salvage yard that might have a factory unit available at a decent cost?

Thanks.

the factory cd changer sucks. I highly recommend aftermarket. I have factory in my 93, and I have an aftermarket Alpine in my 94. I remember having to run the mbus wire for the alpine changer, so I think you will have to, as well. Yes, you need an adaptor -- it's around $15. I put mine under the passenger seat -- much easier to access than the trunk area.

Where is the factory installed CD Changer cable located in a 1998-2000 XC? I've searched around in the cargo area, and I am unable to locate a cable for the CD Changer. Did the factory really install a cable for the optional changer?

Cheers! Rabbit

my 850's did not have factory installed cables -- I ran my own both times.

Abuelo, I regret that no one has addressed your questions - I also wish to know about this topic. I assume that no one here (or at Swedespeed, or Brickboard) have the CD Changer wired into the cargo area of a V70 (an assumption I'm making due to the lack of a response from other members from three websites). From my investigation into this matter, the 2000 XC does not come prewired for the changer (don't know about 1998 XC's either). I have not located a DIN connector in the cargo area. I have been told that it needs to be installed - at considerable cost. The front and rear seats needs to be pulled, as well as several pieces of trim have to change. Also, the cute little cargo net on the drivers side would become a thing of the past. At least half a day (4 hrs.) to do the installation. I do not look foward to doing this installation...

I hope that someone here in "Volvoland" would reply to this thread, and enlighten us with the real deal! I find it hard to believe that none of our "Volvoland" residents know nothing about this issue - but I could be wrong - or perhaps no one else is interested in this topic....

The Alpine CHA-S634 (with a required AI-NET cable) would be my choice for an aftermarket changer (plays MP-3's).

Good luck getting an answer...

Cheers! Rabbit

Installation does NOT require any seats to be removed. I would say about 1 hour for installation.

Fair enough! A Volvo technician at Fairfax Volvo gave me the rundown (his version, of course). I accept that he may have misled me. I do not know. In any case, how is the installation done - in other words, how is the cable routed from the HU to the cargo area - without potentially damaging the cable (as the Volvo tech was quick to inform me about).

Cheers! Rabbit :)

remove the head unit, and snake the cable down to the right. You should be able to push the cable out the lower trim piece (passenger footwell) from inside the 2-din opening. Push the cable up into the trim leading to the seat. I installed my changer under the passenger seat (much easier to get to, and can't be seen by theives)... However, if you really want the cargo area install, route the cable underneath the passenger seat rail. You will need to remove the corner piece on the rear right seat bolt. It pulls right out. Also remove the stepboard (plastic) from the rear right door. Run the cable under the trim piece. Fold the 60% seat down (it does not need to be removed. For wagons, pull the seat cushion forward, in sedans, pull the cushion up. run the cable into the cargo area. Replace the trim piece, and bolt cover. Return the seat cushion and seat back to their normal position. You're done.

Funny that you said to wire the cable towards the passenger side - considering the fact that the CD Changer is mounted on the drivers side on the cargo area of a XC\V70\850. I admit that has me a little confused. Perhaps the cable could be routed down the drivers side as well (using your instructions above) - to avoid the crossover from the passenger side. I am still not sure which path the cable takes as it enters the cargo area. There appears to be two potential paths for the cable to run - one behind the drivers side molding/trim side panel in the cargo area, or under the cargo area floorboard. In any case, thx, potroast for your help... much appreciated! ;)

Any idea how the factory runs this cable? Just a thought...

Cheers! Rabbit :)

again, I put mine under the passenger seat, so that method was better for me. I also ran my RCA's to the amps on the passenger side. But I ran my power on the driver's side, and it's the exact same process, just different side.
