6.5" In 850 Rear Door W/oe Grill?

Has anyone had success in installing a 6.5" speaker in the rear door of a 850 sedan or wagon? I'm ok with a little modification, but nothing too drastic. If you were successful, what brand/model speaker did you use and please post a pic or two.

Thanks.

u should be able to put any 6.5" in the rear doors... but the problem is mostly the oe grill won't fit over it... u can try one of the shallow fits or component sets that don't have the tweeter protruding in the middle... the mounting points may interfere with the stock grill mounting points, but maybe those will be able to fit under the stock grill...

The problem I see is not so much the tweeter protrusion, but the mounting points of the stock grill. I went and bought a cheap Pioneer 6.5" from my local Best Buy to do some test fitting. The cut out diameter fit PERFECT with the plastic "umbrella" that the OEM speaker mounts into.

The problem is the outside diameter of the Pioneer overlapped the mounting holes that the grills tabs go into.

Why in the world did Volvo use such an odd size speaker?

Well you see... volvo will be volvo... the put a lot of unnecessary things in really odd places (think about the window swithches (why are't they on the front doors? --- we don't know). So in a similar fashion our speakers were discounted and put in strange looking boxes in the hat shelf and our door speakers are in poor areas as well. As for the rear door speakers, their size is a real mystery to those who have tried to make them. I'll tell you what bing has told many people: its better to have a nice set of component speakers in your front door pockets than it is to have some speakers in the back. As for fitting the speaker, you could take tin snips and cut down the basket on the speaker itself to work around the mounting position. As for methods to hold it in place you will most likely have to drill some new mounting holes.
