KS_R
my '96 854R would not idle today. it will start, hit about 2k rpms, come down to 1k, and then drop to 500rpms and die. It was fine last night when I drove it home from my run, but now it just won't stay at a steady idle.

KS_R
ran an OBDII and it said the MAF is bad. would a MAF keep the car from running?
erikv11
There is a standard way to test the MAF.If the MAF is bad, then unplugging it won't make the car any worse. But if the MAF is good, then unplugging it will make the misfiring worse. Can you start it, and hold the throttle to run it at slightly higher RPMs, like 1500 or something? Then unplug the MAF. No change means bad MAF, engine stumbles (more) means MAF is working.

It should still run without a MAF, just rough.
