850 Turbo Id & Where To Find It

Guys

What Mitsu turbo is my mid '96 build 850 R auto running? I suspect 15G as opposed to 16T.

Also for my interest & all other turbo owners who use this site, where do you find the relevant ID on the turbos themselves? I have searched...

Is it really worthwhile switching from a 15G to a 16T when I'm looking at a ceiling of around 300HP (RICA remap) for solid reliable road use only? If it's better to retain the 15G (assuming that's what's on my car), will a 3" downpipe help things along?

Thanks in advance! ;)

You're in Australia, so it could be different, but I'm 99% sure you're running a straight outlet 15g.

Upgrading to a 16t and getting 300hp is not impossible, but you will need way more than a turbo and a RICA map for that.

You want to go with an 18t straight, 3" dp, 3" catback, and some injectors, RICA, and maybe you can attain the numbers you want.

Thanks Pras.

So where do you ID the turbo? Do they have a tag or stamp somewhere?

Re a RICA remap, according to RICA UK, they have a 280 & a 304BHP tuning option for my vehicle - you're suggesting the latter isn't possibly with a 15G, even though this is the claim?

To be honest, I think I'd be happy with 280 anyway - another 40BHP has to be noticed!

there is a tag on the turbo, but over time it gets greased over and hard to see from anywhere unless the turbo is off of the car....look right below the wastegate actuator, looking at the turbo from the driver side of the car, twd the pass side....the tag is right below the wastegate actuator, and next to where the intake pipe clamps down....

like I said, 300bhp is not impossible, but you will need alot of things to make that happen....3" exhaust, delete your cat, good boost hoses, alot of Stage 0, etc.

Is that 850 R a manual? If so I believe they have a 16t. Of course you should double check but from the tag on the turbo.

Yes, an auto my car is, so I'd say I've definitely got a 15G.

I guess the next question is what turbos are used for the claimed power/torque figures of the various ECU remap specialists & are these figures indeed accurate? That could open a Pandora's Box!

usually the stock turbo, but with upgraded exhausts, intakes. and the predicted power is in ideal conditions....newer cars, good weather, etc. Figures are accurate for ideal conditions and on a dyno...no wind resistance, friction, etc.

expect 20hp or so less than claimed numbers.
