Guest JMH
I've got a 2001 S60 T5 which is almost up to 105k miles. I know I need a timing belt, but have gotten quotes all over the place. Everything from $360 - for just the belt and tensioners, to $725 for the same, up to $843 for the complete 105K service (including timing belt, etc).Anyone have a clue what REALLY needs to be done at 105K? leurven
I'd say just do T-belt and have them check the accessory belt and tensioners etc... There may be some work needed there too. Have a Volvo place do it.
loseR99
i recently bought all of the parts for my 105k service, t-belt - tensioner - idler - water pump - fuel filter, most everything else i've done. Will be doing the service about 10k early too. With something as critical as a timing belt job, i wouldn't wait until i rolled exactly 105k. I'd source some quality parts online and find an independent mechanic. On my s40, parts were $200 total, and i was recently quoted at $300 plus coolant for the labor. I'd also check serpentine belt system, fuel filter, pcv system, plugs, thermostat, etc. If the complete service you mentioned includes the majority of these parts as well as labor costs, i think that you've found the answer. Best of luck with the service.
SkyWriter
do what the maintenance schedule calls for, when it fails down the road it probavly does more damage besides gets you stranded. it's cheap insurance, unless you're poor. leurven
my dad's s60 has 121k on it and it runs fine and we didnt replace anythingWhen the timing belt snaps you won't be very happy. Maintenance is so you aren't left stranded on the side of the road. I would get the work done when Volvo recommends.

leurven
You didn't spend all that money on an XC90 just to let the maintenance slide. Sell the car and buy a honda if you don't want to work on it or do maintenance.

The car will treat you much better in the long run.
pfeener
To JMH: Follow the owners manual for the common stuff. Flush the antifreeze and the brake fluid every 2-3 years. Flush the transmission fluid every 50K or so. As you already know, you need to do the timing belt at 105K or when it breaks it will take out the top end of the engine to the tune of $3-4K. You also have to replace the tensioner. The mechanical tensioner is only good for one belt change. It will come apart before the next belt change is due. The water pump is a variable. So folks do replace it and some don't. More than likely it will go the 200K to the next belt change.
