Cold Air Intake Under $10 Bucks

I know there has been alot of debate about this kind of cold air intake because of water ingestion. I live in Indiana and we dont get much major water situations here. Basically if im dumb enough to run thru that deep of water i deserve what i get LOL. anyways.. for those of you looking for a good source ... i looked everywhere for that black type flexible intake hose couldnt find any and when i did they wanted like 30 bucks. I went to home depot and looked around and found this type of flex hose for your home a/c vents its 3" diameter and an 8ft. section when strecthed out. I basically did as the other guy did but i think its more sturdy and looks a heck of alot better in the engine compartement and i guess you can paint it if you wanted to. The only PITA is getting it hooked to your air filter box. they also have it in 4" daim. but i was worried that would be to big..... total price for everything was $ 9.50.

For some reason I always thought that Florida had good drainage. A couple days ago we got about 2 inches of rain in a hour and I had to drive through 6 inches of water at an intersection. I guess this will only work for some folks out there. I still dont think you will see too much gain from it.

IVAN... umm i dont see a volvo in your sig.. umm what do u drive ? If you dont own one you dont have much say do ya..

sorry i need to get on my soap box for a minute. everyone today throws the word " ricer " around and i think its quite arrogant to do so considering before the " Fast and Furious " movie there wasnt much aftermaket tuning and such and after that movie it just blew up.

So.... before some of you guys decide to call someone a ricer, and it may be a hard pill to swallow... it really all started there. If you notice alot and i mean alot of these aftermarket performance shops and such popped up after that movie and it kinda spread. 20 yrs. ago who would have thought about putting a chip in a volvo and a cold air intake... plzzzzz...

fyi, some of us were planning on modding our cars. And were upset when they came out with The Fast and the Furious... even though it was a pretty good movie. It did that blew up the industry, and then those who were original with there modifications now began to see that all modding is not neccisarily cool, hence the invention of 'rice'. Being that it is usually done on Japanese cars, etc.

Just playing devil's addvocate there, I think the mod wouldn't be that bad if you can concele it a little better.

Wouldn't this be worse?

First the air has to travel further which would give slightly less response and give more time for the air to get heated just as much as it would stock. Second it runs next to the hot pipe (not to mention closer to the block it self). Third that kind of metal tends to absorb and hold more heat for longer time than the plastic piece.

My last concern is how you fit it in the air box. Is it bent in or did you dremel out the hole?

Don't take Ivan too seriously, he's kinda just an ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.

You'll probably notice lots of times his posts seem to get ignored. With good reason :)

About the mod, I'm not 100% sure its any better really. The upper area inside the radiator cowl has positive air pressure and its not exactly pre-heated by anything else in front of it. The lower grille area also has air pressure, but is it any greater? And is it any cooler? Looks to me like you've simply moved the inlet down to where it can pick up more debri making your air filter clog sooner.

But hey, if it works...it works.

My thought would be to leave the original intake pipe intact and *add* another one like you have.

viper in short... im saying until that movie and trust me i hate that loud buzz sound from a honda, there wasnt much aftermarket stuff for anyone. no cold air intakes, no place to get bigger turbos, ecu chips, etc. people may have wanted to but no resource. now... its all over like the flu. im not big on the buzzing honda thing but i have to give credit where credit is due...

as far as performance gains im sure its not gonna be a major thing but this is what the guy wrote that originally did it..

"I found my fuel economy increased to 10.5l/100km around town. down from 12l/100km..."

oh and yes i think what im gonna do is go by my local plumbing place buy a 2 3/4" Y and tie the old air intake with the one i installed. basically have air coming in from both and be forced. as far as heat and such im not that technical but im gonna try and keep an eye on the fuel mileage and such and see if anything changes.

as far as water getting i truly doubt it... unless i decide to become a fishing boat captian and submerge the car it would have to be alot of water and alot of suction to get that much water that far and do damage in my opinion.

think about it peeps... cars that have scoops and such on top of the hood are prone to get more water in as this system unless i dunk the car. drive down the road with a hood scoop in rain for about an hour and see how much water you have ??

Ivan.. im not sweatin...trust me.. B)

thank you for everyones opinion. :)

It's foolish to think that "tuning" was spawned by a movie. Partly because that would assume Holywood had an original idea, but mostly because well before the first Civic was produced there were people adding power to their daily drivers.
