GarrettSD
Im a newbie to this forum and a new Volvo owner. I have a 2004 S40, not the 2004.5 that just came out, I was wondering what my options were or where I can find the options for car stereo upgrades. I have the stock equipment cd player and want to know what is possible to be added such as new deck or a cd changer or amp or speakers. Any help would be nice? potroast
you can do all of the things you've requested. Which would you like to start on?
GarrettSD
Im looking to start with the head unit and the speakers. What of each would fit and do I need any installation kits for these? Im in the US also if that helps.
potroast
For head unit you have limitless options. You have room for a 2-din, so you can do anything up to that size. You can use a pocket to fill in the remaining space. I'm using a Panasonic CQ-8300U right now, and it's great. Apline and Eclipse make good units, as well.I do not know offhand what speaker sizes volvo uses in the S40, so I cannot tell you what sizes to get. CDT Audio is my favorite brand for speakers. I also think Infinity is quite good.
GarrettSD
So do I need any special connectors or do I just need the ones already with the stereo? If I do need one what kind do i need? Thanks for the help so far.
GarrettSD
Ok i beleive the speakers and size are all the same for 2004 as it is in the prior coplue years. I just need to figure out what the best harness and connectors are for my car.
Bing_0
for heaunits, you need metra wiring harness 709220 i think and a din pocket. and like what has already beensaid, the options are limiteless...as for speakres, i would focuson front and rear doors, whichs should be both 5.25"but for me to better helpy ou, give me your goal for your system upgrade, and your budget.b
GarrettSD
Im looking for a fairly good system with something like a 15" in the trunk and around 300 for deck and whatever needed for sub and amp and speakers. Basically something good but not the absolute best. Also is there a good place to get this stuff from that does top notch installation in Volvos? potroast
don't get a 15... they suck. I say a good 12" is ideal.Elemental Desigs, CDT, Concept, Resonant Engineering, etc.

sks40
So do I need any special connectors or do I just need the ones already with the stereo? If I do need one what kind do i need? Thanks for the help so far.←I have a 2002 S40 that I have replaced the entire system with aftermarket. Really pretty simple.Front speakers are 5.25" in the doors, 3" in the dashRear speakers are 5.25" coaxials (I made an adapter to fit 6.5")Harness:The Metra 70-9221 (for the 1999 and up S80 harness) fits the S40 harness if you have a HU-xxx headunit (don't believe the Metra web site). The SC-xxx uses the 70-9220. Trust me on this one. I took the chance and bought the harness adapter for the S80 and tried it on my S40. It fits mechanically and electrically without any modification. Metra 40-VL10 for the antenna. DIN Pocket:You can actually get a single DIN pocket that was used in some S40's that had a factory sindle DIN headunit. I just asked my local Volvo parts dept., ordered it and received it in about 4 days. ~$30 i believe. The part number for the pocket is 30613741 and comes with the rubber mat.See link below:http://s40concepts.net/forum/index.php?t=m...rt=15#msg_13513Stan
GarrettSD
Thanks a lot Stan and the others, looks like ill be getting on that right away now that I know what to get. One more is it hard to install yourself or should i just let someone install it for me (the deck and din pocket)?

S40 Concepts has a great write-up in their "How To" section..http://s40concepts.net/forum/index.php?t=m...26afd1f1dab41eaA note on the door speakers... There are apparently two styles. One has a separate spacer ring that is glued to the speaker and can be separated and used with aftermarket 5.25" speakers. The other, that mine had, has the spacer molded in as part of the speaker itself. In this case you need to make spacers. I was able to fabricate these fairly easily with 1/2" MDF using a Roto ZIP type tool.Stan
