tallahasseegreys
I have about 42,000 miles on my serp belt. While changing the oil tonight, I noticed it was split, longitudinally. That is, it appears to be split down the entile length of the belt. The split goes all the way through. It's not exactly down the middle, but about 60/40, if you know what I mean.I am making a 450 mile trip tomorrow. Do I need to replace? When looking at the under side of the belt (the side with the ridges), it looks ok. There are many small cracks in the ridges, but I think it looks ok for a belt with this mileage. Definitely no fraying or anything like that.SEE PICTURE 2 POSTS BELOW
WhiteT5
Uhhh yeah, I wouldn't even think about going on a trip with a belt like that.

64pvolvo1800
You'd be tempting fate unless you really live right! At the very least you should get a new belt and take it and the tools needed with you in case you breakdown. It won't kill the engine if it breaks, but you'll feel like such an ass for knowing it was bad and not fixing it first.
speedn_j
if your car broke down..would you pay $60 to be back on the road again? fix the belt and not get stranded
tallahasseegreys
How long should a belt last? 42k seemss a bit short. I got it replaced at an indy when he did the timing belt and water pump. Are serp belts typically warranted for more than 42K? ***I need to get on the road tomorrow. I may not be able to get mt indy to do this. Would you trust this job to a Firestone or other franchise type place?***
erikv11
standard interval on a Serp belt is 60k, or about 4 years if you live where the weather is easy on engine components, or when it wears out. whichever comes first. I doubt there is any warranty.Serp belt relacement is about the easiest of the easy jobs, I tihnk you could trust Firestone to do it right (but I wouldn't! they'll probably give you a crappy belt that only lasts about 40k ). prasamin
get a good belt and take it over to any mechanic with a friggin eyeball (atleast one eyeball), and they should be able to do it.don't drive with it split like that.
dmelviØØ7
I would also look into what caused that split, that might be kind of a problem.
jdlc
I would also look into what caused that split, that might be kind of a problem.replaced my serp belt w/ oem at 70k after 5-I'm a follower/2 years and it still in good shape, so I keep it in the trunk as my spare. Suggest you replaced it with oem, they last long.+I'm a follower on finding out what caused the split, if any. could be the replacement part is just crappy

tallahasseegreys
Well I took it to the local Sun Tire, and they replaced it with a Gates belt for $75. I would have done it myself, but I 1)Did not have the tools 2)Had to leave town in a couple hours 3)Never did it before and didn't want to get in a situation where I got the old one off but couldn't get the new one on.Thanks for the input everyone...I'm still surprised it only lasted 42k. I'll keep my eye on the new one to look for a similar failure.
