jdlc
I've been reading more and more about blown head gasket, which is to be expected given the the age and mileage of 850's and x70's at this point. I have only 100k miles on our 9 year old V70 N/A and am wondering, is there a preventive maintenace for gasket failure? We intend to keep the car as long as it is working (kids grew up with it they would probably cry if we get rid of it). I do my share of maintaining it, keep the flame trap clean and stuff, and just replaced the cooling hoses (sans heater hoses, save that for next coolant flush in two years). I use synthetic oil and change oil twice a year (before and after winter) since usage is not high - mixed highway and small city streets with very little traffic jams.Any tips or ideas? pfeener
Flush the antifreeze every two years and never ever let it overheat. The antifreeze get corrosive if it's left in too long.
jdlc
Flush the antifreeze every two years and never ever let it overheat. The antifreeze get corrosive if it's left in too long.Doing that. Also, when the car unusually run hot, I replaced the CT sensor right away and the issue went away (replaced the thermostat at the same time). In an unrelated matter, I have the t-belt changed in time (only belt was changed, I have hydraulic type tensioner). I also flush my brake fluid every two years and change the ATF (thru dillution) with Mobil 1 ATF every oil change. I already flush power steering and replaced that with Mobil 1 ATF as well, before I read that it should really be type F but there seems to be no issue. Just demonstrating that I am taking care of the car. Thanks

beachnut
Make it a habit to keep an eye on your coolant reservoir. I know some people (not here on VS I hope) that haven't popped the hood on their car for months. Coolant can leak out in many places and just vaporize without really leaving any telltale leaks, although you'd probably smell it if you have keen nose. Over the course of time you might end up with no coolant and overheat the car.
