Since you're using a laptop, you can also have the laptop automatically shutdown/hibernate/standby with a program called "hibermon"

Search mp3car.com forums for the program. It works by sensing when you're running on plugged in power or battery power. When you enter battery power it triggers hibermon and executes your preferred method of shutdown automatically.

the best method i've seen is wiring the sleep sensor on the laptop to a relay and switched acc power. you can trick the computer into thinking the screen is closed when the car is shut off and it'll go to sleep. turn on the car and it thinks the screen just opened so it wakes up. you never have to turn it on or beat it off, and boot time is much faster.

it takes some know how and it is something you might have to have a pro do (at least have them soder some leads to the motherboard), but it is pretty slick imo. someone on vs did it with a powerbook but i don't have the thread handy.

At first I thought hardware solutions like this would be the best, and while they do give you the most flexibility, doing things software-level through the APM is easier / safer, IMO. While your laptop may continue to run if it crashes, I doubt this is the end of the world. However, there's no risk doing something wrong, no time or money on custom wiring, and no voided warantee.

SwedishMike, what'd you end up getting? I know you were thinking about a tablet for a while.
