Quick Way To Tell If Clutch Replaced Already?

Local ebay offering -

Would only consider buying if clutch have been replaced already(and hopefully RMS would have been done too).

I notice in some areas of the cars like in the strut tower, there are ink/paint markings, probably QC check marks during production. Or sometimes, when an original bolt is first loosened, you get that distinct 'unlocking' sound which is not easy to duplicate if the same bolt have been previously worked on. So, is there a quick and dirty way to find out if the engine and manual tranny have been previously separated? (again, hoping that both clutch and RMS would have been worked on, the logical thing to do).

Seller is a used car dealer - will have access to car being local to check other things out.

Just need a daily driver, and very comfortable working on 98. Clutch and RMS is just out of my league.

Thanks

There would be surface corrosion to the zinc coating and coating of dirt on the bolts over time. Check that they've been disturbed or look for these marks indicating that a socket or wrench had been to them.

That's what I'd look for...

Drive it and see how the clutch feels? I've neard of clutches in stock road cars lasting anywhere between 40-300k (although I must admit 300k is a stretch). Probably no easy way to tell other than feel, unless you get lucky with the bolts. Even then you don't know what the reason for removing was...

a new clutch is noticable lighter to disengage. that, of course, is relative to the one being replaced. looking for suporrting documentation, otherwise, assume it needs to be replaced.

I guess you could always take it to a shop and have them look. Just tell the people you're takin 'er for a spin and get it checked out :P
