Error Fault: "engine System Service Required Urgent"

Kinda like a check engine light. You can see where the codes are stored by holding in the read message button on the turn signal stalk and pressing the rear fog light button twice. My bet is it is in the ECM, is the car running any differntly?

EDIT. It is different from a chaeck engine light, I really shouldn't drink so early in the evening.

Okay. Stop. That's not a real message.

Is it Service Urgent? Or Service Required?

Either way you can't tell what the problem is just from this message. It is kind of like a check engine light, only more helpful. It gives you a little more information so you don't have to call Volvo and be like, "and it sounds like GRRRarreuioahgsjdlgksadgasd do you think it's safe to drive?". If you check your owner manual you will find the following information:

SLOW DOWN: Reduce speed to help prevent damage.

DRIVE SLOWLY: Drive the car carefully to an authorized Volvo retailer for inspection.

STOP SAFELY ASAP: Stop and switch off the engine - to help prevent serious risk of damage.

SERVICE URGENT: Take your car to an authorized Volvo retailer for inspection as soon as possible.

SERVICE REQUIRED: Take your car to an authorized Volvo retailer for inspection at your convenience (but preferably before the next scheduled maintenance service).

FIX NEXT SERVICE: Have the system affected inspected at the next scheduled maintenance service.

SEE MANUAL: Refer to your owner's manual. For additional information, please contact your Volvo retailer.

Another message you might see is "performance reduced." This is a combination of "drive slowly" - cause you won't be able to make it go fast; "slow down" - because you don't have a choice; and "STOP SAFELY ASAP" - because otherwise you'll get nailed by someone doing 60 in a 35 sooner than later. This is equivellant to "Have me towed. Now, bitch!"

To get any more info than this you really need symptoms or a code or two or three which can be deciphered.

I went and looked again. You are correct it is ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE URGENT (yes - no "required" there). Thanks for all the info.

I did call Volvo and they said it was probably emissions control related or related t the gas cap being tight enough. My thought was "maybe" on the emissions control - but did not think that this was the fault related to the loose gas cap thing that I have been familiar with on past Volvos of mine.

Bottom line they said I should come to the dealer when I get a chance but that there is not a big chance of doing damage related to this fault.

Thanks, Again, T
