Smell With Heater Use

Hey all, I've used the search feature, from what I'm gathering I think its the heater core, but making sure...

When i turn on the heater, a burning smell comes though... most of the posts i've read say its a sweet odor with a bad heater core from leaking coolant... both my C70 and 850 have this problem what do you guys think it is?

I have the very same issue and am about to change my heater core. I haven't had any noticeable coolant loss, but I don't think it takes much coolant to start the smell.

If your not losing noticeable amounts of coolant, then consider yourself lucky that the leak is not that bad. But still go ahead and switch out the heater core.

Note that is is defnintley more of a coolant or sweet smell than a burning smell however. Burning smell may be some old leaves caught up in the system buring off.

the smell should make you want to go for some pancakes... love that maple syrup. If its an actual burning smell, it might be your heater motor frying or the resistor on the way out. Both of those would happen swiftly though, not over a long period of time.

Question" When replacing the heater core, do you also need to purchase the "o-ring" or the "o-ring kit". I wasn't sure that came with the heater core of what parts may be reusable from the old.

Thanks

Nothing comes with the core at least from Eeuroparts. I bought the kit from groton and just used the two lil black orings where the core connects with the pipes. the whole thing took an hour.

Again, my guess would still be the heater core. Adjusting the temp (without turning the fan, AC, or any other power controls) will also adjust the flow of fluid through the heater core. Any time it senses that you need more heat than is available through the outside temp, it will adjust the flow through the heater core to compensate.

Big suggestion............ pull back the carpet next to your gas pedal foot and remove the black kick plate(its one screw) Look at the bottom of the core, If you can see any signs of coolant...then bingo you've got a bad core.........
