pfeener
Abount 23K miles and 22 months ago I put new control arms, purchased from FCP, on my S70. They were Scan Tech arms ( I know, I know they're junk. It was before I knew). Well the bushings have failed and they're wobbling all around. Anybody had any luck with FCP giving any kind of a credit on failures like this that are over 12 months?
Guest Guest
Definitely call and complain about the poor product and maybe they will stop selling Scan-Tech products if they hear enough people complain. I really doubt you have a leg to stand on for a refund or exchange for a different brand unless you buy alot from them or its a known defect to them since you know its a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty for this part. Thats the contract for the item when you buy it as you know and you are well past that. But who knows you got nothing to lose if you call.Next time no more Scan-Tech. MadeInJapan
pfeener, if you haven't replaced them yet, you could put Slater's bushings in them if he's still selling them.
pfeener
That's a thought MIJ. Do you have a Web link for Slater?
pfeener
Another thought; since these are Scan Tech arms I wonder if the boss in the control arm casting is the same size as the Volvo originals?

pfeener
Update to my original post:I changed out the Scan Tech arms today and installed genuine Volvo control arms. As I said in my original post, the Scan Tech arms had 23K miles on them of really easy city and highway driving. I installed them myself and the arms were in the loaded position when tightened and they were tightened to the correct torque setting. The Scan Tech arms I took out had a 100% failure of the bushings. All 4 bushings (2 on each side) had failed to the extent you could slide the center steel bushing right out and in one case the whole rubber bushing would slide right out of the larger outer ring that's pressed into the casting. The rubber wasn't even ripped, it was just never bonded correctly to the metal sleeves. In addition, because of the constant movement in the front end alignment, I ripped about 20K miles off my tires. If anyone on the forum has Scan Tech arms installed that they bought from FCP, I would strongly recommend you change them out. 100% failure of the bushings is not a random event. I have to believe that all the bushing will fail prematurely. It's an important part and could be a real safety hazard. What absolute JUNK. I learned my lesson; no more aftermarket parts for me, unless they are performance upgrades.

RussB
I installed Scan-Tech control arms in 5/05...I did notice the boot on the ball joint didn't seal well, and there was water in the ball joint. I also have an unexplained front end "shimmy" at around 70mphI need to have a look at them ASAP!

pfeener
I didn't call FCP. I figured they weren't going to do anything since it was over 12 months. I ordered them from Richardsons Volvo in Texas (myswedishparts.com). They are easy to deal with and I had them in two days.RussB, I would be very concerned given what I saw with the arms I took off mine. If I were you I would remove them and inspect the bushings and ball joint. I'll bet you'll find the bushing sleeves will be loose in the rubber bearings. I installed mine in Dec of 04, so you're only about 6 months from me.
