So My Sc-815 Eats Speakers

Here's the long background story: Back in 1998 two speakers in my/our TLA blew, the rear left door and rear left deck. The dealer replaced the rear deck speaker but not the door, which I didn't discover until about 2 years ago. Fast forward to last week, one morning I head out and the speaker is poping and crackling off and on. When I get home I check the wiring (ok) but the speaker sure is messed up, no bass response and the highs are all crackly. I am going to take it apart to make sure it's not a loose wire inside the unit, but I am not keeping my hopes up. My questions are this:

Because there was only one speaker hooked up for the past few years and those speaker are wired in parallel, did that cause the replacement deck speaker to go bad? (ie too much or too little load)?

Is there any place besides my local stealer where I can get these speakers at a somewhat reasonable price? I looked at most of the online discount european parts places and didn't have much luck?

And yes, I know replacing them with aftermarket units will probably get better sound quality, however I don't feel like turning this into a gigantic project that I can't afford to complete.

TIA,

Pete

Each speaker is 8ohm. Having only one hooked up will not cause any damage.

Are you in europe? If you are in the United States, check out www.partsexpress.com. They have OEM replacements for $0.69 for the door, and $1.97 for the deck.

CDT CL-5X speakers cost $55 for the pair, work great on the stock head unit, and fit right in. They take no longer to install than replacing the OEM speakers, and will sound much better! So I do not understand what you mean when you say a "gigantic" project that you can't afford?

No, I am in the US. Do you have a # for the partsexpess speakers (the OE ones)?

As far as replacing the speaker with better units, I was under the impression that because our speakers are 8 ohms in the rear finding suitable drivers was a problem, and that replacement units were genereally less sensative, necessitating an amp etc etc.

it's a 4ohm driver. If you wanted to have 2, wire them in series, instead of parallel. You would probably get away fine with them in parallel, but I don't recommend it, and am not responsible if you do choose that.

An amp would sound better, but it's not neccessary, at least not with the right speaker. The CDT CL-5X speakers I recommended are 30-60W. The head unit can power these.

The wires are already run, I wanted something that would serve as a drop in replacement, and that wouldn't be it. Not to mention they don't look like they are near the quality of the OE speakers.

well, sorry, but then you arn't fully aware of the absolute crappiness of the oem speakers...

Personally the OEM speakers look like they are much higher quality than that POS.

Wiring them in series would be a PITA. The ony way to easily do it would be to wire them in the Dash and then the speaker wire runs would be so long it would sound like arse.

Try salvage yards for replacement speakers, or just remove the door speakers and replace the ones in the deck with some that are 4 Ohms.

I doubt you will miss speakers in the rear doors.

wiring at the dash would be easy, and length of wire would not matter. we're talking about 10 feet here, not 1000 feet... Wouldn't know the difference.

and he's complaining about the OEM gear, then get a good set of coaxials, like the CDT CL-5X...

Seriously, the OEM gear is some of the worst crap I've ever heard!

As factory systems go, Volvo's are not bad.

I have heard plenty worse factory systems and plenty of aftermarket ones that were not as good.

So, either your expectations are very high, or your criteria for what makes a good system are significantly different than mine.

likely both. I don't think much of any factory system. Toyota systems are worse than Volvo... But I would never put the words "Volvo OEM Stereo System" and "good" in the same sentence.

To be fair, I think that Sony, Audiobahn, Profile, Pyramid, Dual, Pioneer, Kenwood, etc, are all crappy, as well.

I think the SQ on the stock speakers is quite good, I just have to seem to have problems with durability for some unknown reason.

I'm going to try ringing some salvage yards on the phone. The best price I have found for them new is:

Door-85.78

Rear Deck-113.82
