C70 Speaker Placement

would adding them to my car be a plug and play, or would i have to swap in a different amp? it a 99 with the sc-901. i can't find much info about these.

Since you have the SC-901, you know for sure you have an external amp (it won't work without one). There was a 4X60W amp and a 4X100W amp offered. I am pretty sure you would have to have the 4X100W amp to operate the 2 subs (they are 8" subs, just to satisfy your curiousity), and you'll need to check out which amp you have. They might work with just the 4x60W amp (check if the wiring and what not is there), but I'm sure it'd sound better with the 4X100W even they did work without it being necessary. If you search the "For Sale" forum, someone was selling 2 of these subs for the C70 in absolutely pristine condition, less than a month ago. If you can't find anything searching, PM me and I'll try to find it for you. But, I'd fish around back there and see if there's wiring already present for them. I'd assume their is, but I've never messed with the subs on a C70, just heard them :P And wow, do they ever make a difference...

Do some checking around on your car, and you'll figure out what all you need I expect (besides the speakers themselves, of course)...

Hope this helps :)

was there an option for subs directly behind the back seats firing forward on the C70's? From the trunk there are two holes 10-12 inches in dia., are they just part of the design of the seat?

That's where the subs are in a convertible that has the top stereo option. Not sure if that is where they were in the coupe or not. I had thought that on a coupe they were in the package tray, but a convert can't have them there. Anyway, in a convert it is almost impossible to hear the subs. I think the soft top isn't really compatible with subs or something. They give a nice massage to back seat passengers, but if I turn them on and off it is really hard to detect a difference.

Search around for "Alpine MRV-F450". This is Alpine's retail version of the 4x100W amp that they made for the C70, but it has a FIFTH channel for driving a sub, with built-in crossovers. Soooo, it will be easy to wire in and won't interfere with the SC-901's surround sound... the amp strips off the lowest frequencies from the other four channels, merges them, and sends them to the sub channel. The only question that remains then is which sub to use? You could use the 8" subs offered for the convertible (do you have a coupe or convertible? A coupe, IIRC), but the SC-901 dolby setup already has four 8" woofers already... two on the hat shelf and two in the front doors. I would (and did) go with a single 12" sub... you just have to figure out where to mount it. My plan? I bought a Dynaudio 12" sub that is "free air" rated, meaning you can use the entire trunk enclosure as a sub box IF you seal it off properly. I intend to build an airtight deck just below the hat shelf then install a grille in between the two 8" subs already there. I'll build some surrounds for the existing 8" woofers so that they don't get muddied by having the 12" right nearby. That should maximize BOOM while minimizing lost trunk space!

Hope this helps,

-Jon

VolvoFan - I would be interested in how your installation goes. I am thinking of doing the same in my coupe. Thought about adding the 9"s in the rear seat - but everyone says that there is not much of a difference.

If you can post some pics of your installation - that would be great.
