'96 850 R Reverse Lights

Dear folks

Searched this with little luck...

As per topic title & description, no-one is home in the reverse light area on my car. There is no power to the globes, but what is normally the culprit? PNP switch, microswitch, or do 850's have a specific reverse light switch?

If so, where can I find it in order to bridge the connections & check the switch is indeed at fault?

Thanks VS'ers.

there is a reverse light switch on the manual trans, but I'm not sure about the auto trans.

if the PNP were really bad, then you'd most likely get the flashing death arrow, and hard shifts, stuck in 3rd, etc, so if your car is shifting normally, I'd say the PNP is probably okay.

I would check the fuses as stated above, and if it's not that, check the reverse light switch if applicable.

Thanks guys, no flashing arrows or poor shifting to speak of, although this car has been off the road since January. I'm fairly certain the rev lights weren't working then either.

I wasn't aware the reverse lights have their own fuse, so shall check that immediately.

Fuse is fine, so it's back to the PNP switch or a reverse light switch if they exist in an auto box.

Does anyone know, or is the reverse light switch located within the PNP switch?

On AT it's just PNP switch. My V70 is doing the same thing right now. For about $80-100 you can replace the switch, Volvospeed has a how to.

Not 100% true. It is because my reverse (backup) light also working intermittently (blinking or not ON at all) when gear is in R. I have no flashing arrow at all. I replaced the PNP switch, everything back to normal. Also, the intensity of the backup light is brighter than before. The old PNP switch had a bad contact for the backup light circuity. This bad contact contributed the light not working most of the time and dim too.

You won't always get flashing arrow when the PNP is failing. Sometimes you will have other symptoms first. I'd replace it.

Thanks guys.

I also noticed last night that there is a distinct 'notchiness' when moving the selector from Park & back into Park. This also sounds like a characteristic of a failing PNP switch.

Another job for the weekend!
