MadeInJapan
A few weeks ago I had an axle replaced (front left). I also bought new tires and had an alignment done. Last week my sway bar end links were making clanging sounds so I tightened them up. The sound went away. Everything in my suspension looks good and tight....in the last year I have put in new struts, spring seats, even strut mounts and IPD HD endlinks. But now, since a few days ago, when I come to a complete stop I hear a click sound. Then I put my foot on the gas to take off the CLICK is even louder. It sounds like it's coming from the front left, or maybe center to left...I thought maybe the ball joint or even tranny mount, but they both look okay. What could it be? Almost sound like tension on something, like metal twisting in something. Can the subframe make such a sound?
prasamin
check your motor mounts, trans mount, and firewall mounts....
MadeInJapan
check your motor mounts, trans mount, and firewall mounts....Yeah, I was thinking that too...almost sounds like it's in the spindle of the new axle...and that was a concern, or the nut holding the axle on...since I just had that done. I'm hoping motor mounts. I know that the one under the timing belt is good and I changed the round one on top of the engine this spring. How can you tell if the strange 2-piece oblong one for the tranny is going bad...it looks okay to me but then again, I don't know anything about twisting it to see what gives. I replaced that and the control arm bushings, upper firewall mount, with QBM.

The firewall mount is good and solid!
jeffo
A few weeks ago I had an axle replaced (front left).Axle ping? Might be worth searching the R forum on SS. I know, different car, but sounds like same issue given the recent axle replacement.

ericutexas
I have the exact same problem, and it started after my mechanic put a reman cv axle on the driver's side. I also know that the outer CV boot on the pass. side is split. My driveway at home is on a downwards incline, and there's a click or two when I back out in the mornings. There's a troubleshooting chart a raxles.com and it says that it's likely a faulty outer CV joint on either side, so that's what I figure it is. The upper torque mount, firewall mount, and lower transmission mount (torque rod) have all been changed out in the last 6-8 months, so it's unlikely to be those things. Motor mounts were also done before I got the car (~15K ago) so I think our problems are mostly likely related to CV axles/joints.
rp850
Put the car on ramps and then tighten down the control arm bolts that attach to the subframe. After I installed my control arms about a week later I had the same noise as you describe. I had to retorque the control arms and also the end links for good measure and then the sound went away. RussB
My guess, the end links aren't tight enough...I've had that happen to me.It's a biotch when you replace (of have someone replace, worse!) a lot of parts, and then "something" isn't right. At any rate, get under there with the wrenches and tighten up what you can

I just did that last week. I don't know about my control arms. Will check those tomorrow. I'm thinking axle ping at this point. But, the XC90 bolt that fixes the newer "R"'s won't fit on mine. I'm thinking the mechanic didn't use locktite and maybe he should have...will check on that tomorrow too. My axle and CV joints themselves aren't the issue. Just put new Raxles in. I think it's the spline ring that moves in the axle hub on acceleration and decceleration that's the issue. Locktight should get rid of the problem. rp850
Seems like you can go more than 40 ft/lbs on the end links. I have the QBM ones and I tightened them quite a bit more than that just to make sure. That's just me though... My endlinks are very very tight...about 40ft lbs. I just did that last week. MadeInJapan
Spec is 37 lb/ft...A skinny-armed girl with a 1/4" drive ratchet can get it that tight I'm sure they can go tighter. Thing is I was having the clunk or rather rattle that is typical of loose endlinks until I tightened them and that sound is gone now. I'm absolutely 100% sure that this isn't the sound I'm hearing now. In fact the axle ping was there before tightening these and is still there. The clunking/rattle is gone.
