5.25" Versus 6.25"

I am designing some custom brackets to fit bigger speakers in the factory location on my 240.

Stock is 4" (yuck)

I know 5.25" will fit pretty easily and look good, 6.5 is always better but might take a lot more work to make it possible.

What are peoples experience in a 5.25 versus 6.5 speaker?

If i get a quality 5.25 speaker is there much difference to a 6.5 speaker in performance?

Any recs on speakers in general? Looking for good performance, not looking to spend 300 dollars a pair.

What kind of brackets? You could likely just get away with some MDF baffles. Basically, a 6.5 has more cone area to move more air. Most people can't hear the difference between the two, but then again most people think their FM trasmiter iPods sound good. It depends how much you care. Also, the price difference in most entry level lines between a 5.25 and a 6.5 is minimal. In some cases, they cost the same. Since that's about the area you'll be shopping in, you might as well shoot for a 6.5.

Read my pinned thread about EU-700s in the rear door of an 850. The same ideas are going to apply to your install.

Most likely billet aluminum brackets, that angle the speakers towards the drivers ears instead of at the other door.

The car is noisy. There are 0 rubber bushings (its all rod ends), it has a 3" exhaust, all sound deadening material has been removed, 17" azenis....

I don't know if I would be able to hear the difference between an FM transmitted IPOD And not in the enviroment I am listening in.

oh yah, one more issue.

I am weight sensitive. This stuff needs to be light weight, or I would just throw the 2 12's back in my trunk.

Get carbon fiber cones then.

5.25 and 6.5 have only a few ounces difference between drivers of the same line.

The weight is in the boxes, magnets, and drivers.

Cones are usually negligible....

Got a good source for aluminum or magnesium framed speakers?

Although CF cones are decent, I was being entirely facetious. Sorry, I should have done a little emoticon or something.

On average a medium range power handling 6.5 magnet and basket is going to tip the scales at about 25-30 ounces.

Coolness, there anything you can't design?

On a side note, what is the 240 weighing in at anyway? Speaking of weight.

my wagon with full power everything and full interior weighs 3100 50/50....

I have dropped atleast 200 lbs out since then....

Hoping for 2600lbs w/ seating for 4
