Installing Sub And Amp

I didn't feel like searching too much but I read the pinned topic on installing a sub and amp and I think I can figure that all out but my question is when wiring the amp to the sub I have a 2 channel amp but only one sub, what do I do? I bought a 4 guage amp kit so I could install myself since it would have costed more to go to Best Buy or somewhere and have them do it plus I don't want to leave my car in their hands. Anyways, what do I do with a 2 channel amp but only 1 sub.

Edit:: It's a Rockford P5002 amp and a 12'' Rockford P2 sub in a Q Logic box. Also while I'm asking questions, why does it hit harder when you face the sub to the back of the car rather towards the front?

I'm not saying they can't do a clean install or a good install but I could save 80 and do it myself since I already have the wiring.

When you say positive of the left to the negative of the right channel do you mean like on the left channel of the amp run one wire to the positive and on the right channel run a wire to the negative?

You don't HAVE to bridge it. Is the amp even bridgeable? Not all are. If the sub wants more power than a single channel can put out, you should bridge it, but if one channel is good enough, you just leave the other one alone. Check your RMS ratings.

And yes, you have the right idea on how to bridge. Each channel sees one wire.

Maybe you work at Bbuy and do good installs, I'm sure there have to be some out there. But the vast majority of "large shop" installs, especially on low-budget entry-level systems, are done poorly. I don't blame him one bit for wanting to do it himself.

Bridging can be different, so you always should check your manual. Hell, I know where this is going so I checked the manual myself. To run your amp in bridged mode, you will connect the positve terminal on the sub to the positive terminal on the LEFT channel, and the negative terminal on the sub to the negative terminal on the RIGHT channel (page 8). I think this is what blotto was trying to say.

Whether it hits "harder" facing towards the back, etc, depends on the car - but it has to do with how "large" the bass frequencies are, and they usually need the extra room to resonate properly. You should play with your sub setup before mounting it just to be sure it sounds good to you.

Good luck with your install!

Yup his amp is bridgeable, but only at 4 ohms. I checked ;) . Adam's right you don't always NEED to bridge your amps, but if you're only going to be running one sub for a while, it rarely hurts (unless you over stress the amp, which is unlikely here).

Cool guys thanks. Hopefully I can get in the garage and get this thing fired up. I believe there are a ton of good installers at Best Buy but when I went to my local best buy just to get my wiring harness she gave me the wrong one. I knew she gave me the wrong one because it said it was for a 1970-1990 something Volkswagen and I said I had a Volvo and she was like oh it'll work. Surely enough I was back an hour later telling her it didn't fit and she was like ohhhhh. I know a lot of the kids that work at Best Buy and I don't want them to touch my car.

thats a prefectly good reason just many people do stuff themselves and often screw things up or are disspointed in the results. But hey thats how people learn.

like they said above the postive wire from the left channel to the sub then the negative cable from the sub to the right channel.

im familair with that amp and sub so thats why i said to bridge it. I agree with you the large stores like best buy or circuit city dont do as good of a job. I so wish i could get a job somewhere else. But Im not even an installer yet even though I'm certified and know my stuff. sigh someday though. <_<

Certified through BB or do you actually have your MECP?

most Best buy installers are just fine and could probably do a cleaner looking install. (i would know I work at Best buy)

best buy is average.... no better and you are playing the lottery by getting your install done by chain retail. No different than taking your car to Jiffy Lube. You will get average at best. Find a well respected audio shop.... some place that does not sell appliances and furniture and phones to pay bills.
