1995 T5-r Questions

Hello all.

I am new to the forum and I tried to search but you cannot search for the word T5-R or T5R as it is not enough letters.

I am looking into getting a yellow T5-R as i have always wanted one and since I about to sell my integra Type R, i am looking into getting one.

My question is this. What are some of the major things i should look for in the T5-R? A friend of mine worked for a volvo dlr in MI for many years and he said the 850 in general and especially the R versions had a lot of electrical and transmission woes. Is this true?

Can people who own or have owned T5-R's please chime in and let me know what they think and what i should really look for. I love the way the T5-R looks and i love the yellow, so this is what i want.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks peoples

Nick

well i have a 1995 t5-R in yellow with 88k. Ive never had a tranny problems or electrical problems that arent due to age. Sometimes my brake lights are trouble becuase of a bad ground but thats about it. You should just keep your eye out in the For Sale section on the site, there is a yellow for sale usually one every two months or so. I love my car and its color and everybody that has seen it on the site likes it as well. Good luck with finding one, when you do youll love it. -Ryan

You're probably thinking about the ABS/Tracs module that have been bothering some in the '96 and newer. Yellow T-5R's only came out in 95 and are pretty hard to find but with some patience and both eyes open, one will show up (accident free). Comes with on-board diagnostics (DTC) which is a huge bonus. If you've done your research and read over the Repairs/Maintenance section on Volvospeed regarding those topics covering the 850's, that's pretty much where the most likely problems are. The pinned section above on 'Volvospeed Useful Threads For Repairs' gives you an idea, also. Keep it well maintained and maybe you can avoid some of these work. They're a pleasure to own and drive.

If you do manage to find one, just be aware that they might be a bit of work to get it back to shape- that's usually why people sell (any car for that matter). Good luck.

I agree to the fullest. I got lucky and didnt have to do much work with my car because it had such low miles. Other yellows havent been so lucky and they are becoming harder and harder to find in decent shape. Just like Alvin said, keep your eyes open and be patient, you might have to go across the country to get it too, but its worth it.

My T-5R has (I think) 149,140 miles on it as of this afternoon and has not had any transmission issues to date (knock on wood). Electrically speaking, regular maintenance of connections and what-not can eliminate just about any problems that can come with age. I haven't the slightest reservation about telling you to buy a T-5R, only that you must take care of it to make it last. 850's will run forever, but not on their own. Good luck in your searches and I hope you come up with something...

i have a yellow 95 855 T-5R with 190K miles on it with its orginal turbo (still strong), trany and engine. it is running great. it is just a 10+ year car which means constant attention but well worth it. Yellow T-5R are rare cars and quite special. Finding one with low miles will be hard and if you are looking for one that hasn't been moded might be harder. I owned a yellow sedan for about 1 year before getting a wagon, which i orginally wanted. believe there is one on autotrader right now. Good luck on the search.......

"850's will run forever, but not on their own."

sums it up right there. the whole reason 850s in general are so affordable is they are generally pretty fubared and people cant stand getting killed at the shop any more. I mean, maintaining an 850 by paying for everything and doing nothing is as bad as a car payment. The lady who owned mine even warned me that they were expensive to work on and thats why she was selling it. My personal opinion is that even though there are tough times, (like for me right now  )they are overall very rewarding cars to get to know how to work on yourself.

My Yellow was in fair/decent shape when I got it. As most here have already said you're getting into an 11 year old car. Expect to make some repairs/maintenance to it, I am. Stage 0 is the very first thing to tackle. Depending on your final intentions/goals, if it is to return it to complete stock or as a platform for tons of mods good luck. Keep VS bookmarked and come often. Many if not most of the questions and problems you will run into have been (or will be) answered here.

I too have a yeller one...and some bad news- the Transmissions on the pre-96 cars was poorly designed and usually will only take 100-120K miles (i know there are a couple on here with more- that isnt the point- it was ALL pre 96 turbos and NA).....

NOW - with that being said, it is almost cheaper to do a 5spd comversion on one of these than rebuild a slushbox....and a tranny dump is the best excuss to get it on with a 5spd ( WAY better car with the 5spd IMO- if you can find the traction!)

This MAY be so (though I've heard otherwise, I'm not trying to disqualify it...), but I have definitely heard of MANY, MANY 850's (T-5R/T5/NA - any) that have gone for way, way more than 100-120 on average. A woman I know has a 1995 850 with 290K on her original tranny, engine, etc...granted, she took care of it, but hey, there's a pretty awesome vouch for them. Plus you don't need an OBDII reader to get codes from your 95 :)
