i stopped by my local volvo dealer and had them test my remote and the guy said its dead. so.. my question is how do you match the correct remote for your year model car ? the guy at the dealer said they have to get the last six of my v.i.n. to match it up for 120.00 bucks ( ouch ). Im looking at buying one off ebay but im not sure how to match up the right one. any help would be appreciated .. thank you...

Not trying to sound like a jerk, don't take this wrong: your owner's manual has detailed info on this. If you don't have one, or yours doesn't have that, PM me, I'll mail you copies of what I have on this.

If I remember there are only three types of remotes (may four) for our 850's.

I'll assume that you 94 850 has the remote with the oval-ish buttons, so go to ebay and just match up by looks. It should work. Then bring the new remote to your car and turn the ignition key to the ON position (not ACC and not start) and back to off. Do this cycle 5 times and at the 5th time do not turn the key back to part, leave it in the ON position and press a button on the remote and it will sync it up.

I think the dealer is right. You could get lucky buying one of ebay but I have heard of others not being so lucky. They all look the same for the 93 to 95 remotes but I think some work with some cars but not with others. I was able to program two remotes to work on either of my cars. That way, I only carry one remote. I had two extra remote that wanted to do the same thing to, but they could only be programmed to one or the other car- not both.

Who know, maybe the car's remote system has a limit of three remotes it can take.

I forgot what the max limit of remotes was, but in theory i think it was something like 4 or 5.

There is a aftermarket version of our remote on ebay, i'm awfully skeptical if it will last and survive as well as regular remotes do, the ones that still work of course...

You could try and fix your old remote. Over time, I found that the switch gets all gummed up inside to a point that it stops working. There should be a 'click' that you can feel when you press a button. If not, take it apart to expose the little board. I used IPA (isopropyl alcohol) or contact cleaner to soak the button while using a pointer to repeatedly press the button until it feels clean. See if that works.
