I have a 1984 Volvo 240 (non-turbo) and was wondering if there are any easy and/or cheap methods of gaining power/reponse. Just little things, like I've heard crazy stuff about turning air filters inside out, but I'd take any advice. Much love.

Get rid of your stock intake manifold and repace it with a b23ft manifold . You will have beter air flow and it will be easy to install a cold air intake pluss it looks alot beter , and you could add a turbo .

The 240 comes from the factory with a cold air intake, just make sure the heated air supply inside the air box is blocked off, it's normally close at temps above 59 F, but the thermostat controlling that often fails. I've tried a K&N filter in place of the normal air box on a normally aspirated 240, and I did notice a very slight increase in power, but only at the top end, and only when the engine was cold. However the increase in intake noise was significant and given the slowness of the car, very embarrassing (read "rice").

You might play around with the fuel mixture and base ignition timing to see if you can bump up the power any, better use premium fuel though.

Otherwise I'd change the camshaft, I prolly try the IPD turbo cam, stay away from the VX3, and replace the exhaust from the cat back with 2.25 - 2.5" pipe, using only one muffler in the rear position. If you really want some decent power, bolt a turbo on, add an intercooler, convert the fuel system to LH 2.4 or MSnS. Personally I would consider this cheap and easy.

Thanks, I was planning on making my own turbo later on (not the actual turbo, but all the plumbing, etc.) but as for the exhaust I already cut it all off. At the headers. Lol it sounds so awesome, and since this isn't a street car (this is my rally car project) it makes it that much cooler. Only thing is that if I park I have to shut it off. If I don't the fumes rise through from under the floorpans where I cut the exhaust out. Other than that it's pimpin as can be.

Wow. Better stick to the v70... I don't think I would suggest replacing your intake manifold with the EXACT SAME ONE from another car. That's a pretty pointless way to spend an afternoon.

Throw in a K cam. If it's not going to see street use, you can modify the airbox by cutting away the front side, leaving just the rim from the front half so you can still clip it on to hold the air filter in place. Or if you really want, just run a hose from behind the grille to the AMM and use a piece of screen to cover the hose...no air filter, and ambient air only. I did that on mine for the last 8 months til I pulled the engine for a turbo swap. But I didn't have an AMM to risk damaging.

Run a pipe out the side to dump the fumes.

Use a 3bar fuel pressure regulator. It will probably run lean under full throttle.

If you want to run higher octane fuel, you could experiment with increasing the base ignition timing advance. Instaed of 12, try 14 to 16°btdc. Listen for ping, though...

Remove weight from the car and install shorter rear gears to improve acceleration. Shorter tires help, too.

Don't leave the header pipe too short, cold air can enter and damage your valves. If you look at pics of dragsters, they plug short pipes and intakes between runs.

When I ran a mini with a huge straight pipe, (once I put in a very large pipe, it was reasonably quiet) I used to plug it with a paper cup. That way, if I forgot to remove it, it didn't cost me too much.

You won't pick up much by messing with the intake, the inlet on my '96 855R is a small horn totaling about 6 square inches! And that car has 240 HP.

Stock parts and a good stage 0 is about the best you can do. Plus the dust won't eat your engine up.

Cutting weight is the same as adding HP.

See my project below, the PO certainly got the weight off!

Sorry - trying download again
