96PlatinumEdition850
Well the car has 105K on the clock. The cat has never been replaced it's all original exhaust. Today I realized when I went to WOT it went to 5/6 psi and I was like...uhhhh. I went home and checked the hoses and didn't see any cracks. I have a feeling it's the cat because I don't hear any hissing or psssstt like anything is leaking. I have a whole new exhaust to be put on so I'm going to have the shop install it on Friday. Do you think it'll be safe to drive on until Friday or should I look at getting something done tomorrow? It could be a boost leak but this is a good excuse to get the exhaust put on right away. I haven't noticed it boosting weird the past couple days but I wasn't driving it very hard. If it was the cat would the power slowly decrease and boost slowly decrease or would it just clog all at once? Any other ideas are welcome. I know there are a lot of random vacuum hoses it could be but I don't think any of those hoses would just blow wide open and cause me to loose 9lbs of boost. Also the vacuum is fine it stays at 21 in park, 19-20 when in drive idle.
96PlatinumEdition850
BUMPNew 3'' turbo back exhaust is going on tomorrow assuming the shop has time to install it. I'm going to pull the WGA line and see if I still only boost 5psi and if I do then I know it's the cat.
94turbo
Have you checked the turbo to see if there is any play in it? Ive read that the turbo usually makes a grinding noise before it goes. Im in this Volvo DIY club thing where you get to use the lifts and ask stupid questions to the mechanics. I thought mine was going up but he told me that they usually go all at once. I think my 850 Turbo's cat is going bad and Ive been driving it for months. The exhaust can smell like rotten eggs. If you don't mind me asking where are you planning on getting the exhaust installed? Is it an iPD? I live in MD too, having trouble finding decent shops nearby. 96PlatinumEdition850
Can't say I've heard any grinding in my turbo. I'm getting it installed by a friend at a local Meineke. It's a totally custom exhaust. 3'' downpipe to 3'' cat to 3'' side outlet exhaust. I picked up the downpipe and exhaust from guys on here and I'm getting the catalytic converter tomorrow when I go to the shop. I've seen the guys welds who plans on doing my exhaust and I'm satisfied. My turbo has been spooling fine but just today I realized it hasn't been boosting to 15psi. I don't want to hurt my engine or my turbo by creating some wicked back pressure so I'm opting to have it installed tomorrow rather than driving on it for long which could hurt the car a great deal. Kibim
I don't think you'll do any damage if it is blocked CAT. If you still have the problem with the new exhaust, check your CBV, if that rubber is torn, you'll not hear anything, or have any boost.
RED 850T Man
Okay, I don't know what the CBV is. I am having boost problems too. 95 850 Turbo @143,000 mi.
TM850R
CBV - Compressor Bypass Valve. When the throttle is closed suddenly, the CBV vents the excess boost pressure back into the intake after the MAF (mass airflow sensor)http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=21017
96PlatinumEdition850
Well the exhaust has been waiting to go on and this is a good reason to have it installed reguardless of the problem. We'll know soon enough.
