Shearer
My friend has a 2000 S40 and she just brought in her car for regular maintenance. Her car only has 60k kms and they said her rotors needs replacing. Now, she's not an aggressive driver, so normally that sounds like a stealership scam. However, she talked to someone she knows who works at another dealership and he told her that is quite normal for the S40s as they do have less durable rotors. Is that true? 60k kms for rotors sounds horrible. Please shed some light. Thanks in advance!

Shearer
They said the rotors has become undersized? Is that even possible?
MadeInJapan
They said the rotors has become undersized? Is that even possible? What they probably meant was that it has worn (the pads eat away at them and make them thinner) to the point that they are under specs for minimal runout for your car. Get another opinion if you don't know how to take your wheels off and measure runout with a micrometer. Are the rotors visibly grooved? If so and they are thin already they probably can't be turned to make true, which is something you should do if replacing the pads. This may also be what they were talking about. www.fcpgroton.com sells the OEM rotors for much less than most other places. My suggestion is to buy from them and have an independent shop who knows Volvo's do the installation and save yourself some $$. It really isn't a difficult job. If you need pads, fcpgroton sells them too. Brembo and Zimmerman are OEM for your car. Hope this helps.
sks40
This sounds about right and is the price we pay for excellent braking I guess. The rule of thumb, for the pre 2004.5 S/V40's anyway, is to replace the rear rotors withe second replacement set of pads. Given that the car has 60K, it is likely it is on its second replacement set for the rear.Stan
dmelviØØ7
I've replaced rotors on an S40 at 14k miles. And a little tip if you are going to do them yourself, the rears need a special tool. The fronts are easy as pie, or a $12 hooker, however you wanna look at it. The fronts are easy as pie, or a $12 hooker, however you wanna look at it.You can use a LONG needle nose plier and it will work the same for the rear.Take it to an independent shop for them to have second opinion or replace rotors/pads if needed. My rotors at 33K miles was like brand new. It's all depends on how you drive.check out Ebay as they usually have a set of slotted Zimmerman for ~$200 for all four rotors. sks40
Some stores will loan you the tool for the rears for free. I borrowed one from Auto Zone for a $30 refundable deposit.Stan
