'06 S60 Radio Heating

it was the first long trip on my friends three months old S60 T5

after couple hours of driving we wanted to get a CD from the head unit and discovered that it's burning hot...

the whole thing I mean - the CD itself, the radio, all the area around the CD slot.

hot-hot-hot, impossible to touch!!!

the CDs are same - you're just burning fingers pulling them out of this crazy thing.

I took the car to the dealer in Burlingame, CA.

they said it should be this way...

they said all S60s are like this...

they said people are all the time bringing S60s to them with this problem, but there's nothing to fix...

it's allright they said.

I just can't believe Volvo produced a car with a wonderful feature:

a CD changer that also can be used for bread baking.

people, tell me I just have to go to another dealer.

tell me it's not going to be like this whole life of this car. Please!

is anyone experienced anything similar?

thank you in advance

It will get so hot that after a few hours the CD will skip from the heat. This has happened to me several times on road-trip’s. If you are going under 70mph, hold the CD out the window a few seconds before you put it away, to let it cool. You don’t want it to adhere to its sleeve. Nothing to be done… -mk

How many did you melt to sleeves before you learned this trick?

That would really make me mad, because with my luck it would be the actual "purchased" cd's that melted and not the ones i burned anda can replace for $0.05

well...

I wouldn't call it normal. Really.

I wouldn't call normal this thing happening to a new $45k vehicle.

also in one European forum I found posts about this overheating happening VERY often,

melting the whole head unit (made by Alpine), and killing the GPS by the way...

people are replacing the whole thing by an aftermarket unit.

just think about it: it's a 2006 vehicle!!!

if this would happen in mine '89 744 I'd probably understand...

but not here.

not in a brand new vehicle that cost what other people make in a year.

makes me mad. I'm switching to Saab.

i have the same problem on my 06 s60 2.5 awd......told the dealer and they said its normal. i do make sure they note it on the service report everytime i go in for service. that way if something ever happens, i can prove that i've been complaining about since i bought the car.

its too bad that a car of this calibur (sp?) has this issue.

Melted none, but saw it coming... The last 'purchased' CD... probably Appetite 1989. -mk
