How Do Your Mechanics React To Your Mods?

Im fortunate to have an indy that’s been working on Volvo’s for over 35 years. He’s an older gentleman who has had many experiences racing Volvo’s in the past. He’s from the Virgin Islands and takes modifications serious. I basically abide by his laws when it comes down to recommendations on mods. He doesn’t object to the exhaust and IPD ECU tune, but will stuff on me if I go too crazy. (Which is why he doesn’t agree on the 18’s without changing to Konig shocks).

my indy has been in business for 25 years, he's my age and loves doing mods with me. i buy all my volvos from him, and he services them exclusively. he'll even let me do some work in the shop as long as i don't put my eye out or something, it's fun to help lend a hand too. it's a great relationship - you know you can trust your mechanic.

and yeah, he thinks my QBM endlinks are bitchin :)

lol my mechanic loves my car, but he's seen better. They tune Audis, VDubs. They also work on Volvos, AWD Dyno and they do chipping in house. (except for volvo chips :( )

When I worked for Honda (I just got my new job at the Volvo dealership in town WOOT!!!) I would pull my car in to work on it during lunch or after work, and they would all laugh. Then they saw the turbo, and then asked what I boost at. They then stopped laughing and asked how fast/ howmuch power it has. As for the volvo guys, they think its cool that I am interested in them, and not the japanese imports. btw, I worked at the Volvo dealership for two years as a lot porter, then took a one year break to work for honda....... anyway, now im back. I hate bringing in anything i drive to a mechanic. I just dont like giving money to people for things i know i can do or learn to. In fact i just "learned" how to replace a bad head on an 850R and im sure im not done learning lol. I do understand however that people also dont have the time to do stuff to thier cars.

Hahaha, nice. Everyone laughs at my car 'til they hear the BOV, then suddenly they're all about asking me how it runs and so on. I tell them it's stock and they say "oh." Then I laugh and tell them they're all idiots. I'm not talking about mechanics on this one, just people who happen to be around my car.

yeah, its amazing how fast they are to make fun of 'the volvo wagon' (which to me isnt an insult) and then they find out its a turbo, and the laughing stops, and usually the jokes do too. for the most part though, they are idiots. the most common heard phrase when they refer to my car is "over-engineered," but I asked them what that meant, and there were suddenly crickets in the room.......

lol, when I took my car to the track everyone was laughing at my car, it was GREAT. apparently everyone laughs pretty hard at a station wagon as you pull up to stage. As I pulled into the burnout box I powerbrake to about 2k, drop, let it rev, build boost and "pump" the gas, letting out boost every time. Didn't hear much later that night. After my first run 3 guys came up to my car, ecstatic of my win. All of them gave me props and I guess I got a lot of respect.

My 2nd to last run when I was in the lanes waiting for my turn to run I had my window open, some people were standing off to the side and one of them laughs and say "look at the volvo!! haha!" another guy standing next to him goes "yo, shut up, that Volvo is crazy."

lol it was a good night.
