USSEnterprise
Is it possible to get a 6.5" speaker to fit in the front door of an 850, and still be able to keep the stock speaker grill?

Che'_Moderator
Is the stock grille even 6.5" tall?
Owned
Is the stock grille even 6.5" tall? No, it's 5.5 - 5.75.You could clear material in the way of the basket and magnet and then just sink a baffle in the stock local. You would lose the grille, but still get your 6.5.Or, you could just to some surgery and have part of the speaker behind the door panel. A bad location, possibly made worse. The BEST option, from a SQ POV, would be to buy a set of kicks from me. Failing that, sticking with 5.25 sounds about right until you can afford something nicer. paulr
I've seen a few jobs where bigger 5.25" ande 6.5" have been hacked into the front doors, but most of them involve zipties and nasty hacking away of the door panel. What most people don't realize is, is that bass and midbass (what most people upgrade the stock locations in searc of) is just as dependent on the baffle space as it is on the driver size. You're much likely to achieve worse sound quality in the < 700Hz range by going from a properly installed medium quality 5.25" speaker to a kick-ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD 6.5" driver held in with zipties. The waves coming off the back will cancel out the waves form the front, and viola, no volume. That being said, if you want to get into hacking the door apart, and custom fiberglass, one could probably put a thin 6.5" behind the stock grill, behind the stock mounting. However, even if this was executed properly (which would be a ton of work) it'd still be a crap location. If you're dead set on 6.5" on the doors, do down-low panels like another VS member (nucleareskimo i think) did. That or just get kicks, which if you have the money, will be much less headache.
