MadeInJapan
Okay, so after 30K free oil changes were over on my '04 V70 I bought the filter wrench from Groton. What a piece of crap! It slipped before it had a chance to tighten to the correct torque specs. Anyway, I used an old, thin t-shirt around the filter and then tightened with it to spec. I ended up sending it back to groton who was happy to give me credit on it towards other stuff. So, I ordered one up for a bit more from IPD. Although they claimed theirs was good quality- same exact maker and and same exact slipping. Oh well, I thought. So, I'm tightening the filter cover and "pling," the damn thing breaks. The square socket hole is a circular metal piece that's spot welded on and it broke at the welds. I couldn't believe it. So, short of going to the dealer to buy their $80 filter wrench, has anyone found a decent one that I can use on my V70?

Stormtrooper1
IPD has one in their paper catalog for $39.95. it's the "heavy Duty" part # MKT12750S That might work better than the $6.95 on they sell.
MadeInJapan
Been searching while you guys have been posting. Found it! Assenmacher (German) company that makes the OEM filter wrench- the one the dealer uses, I blieve. Part number is ASTV410. They are having a sale and I bought one for less than $18 including shipping: http://www.tooltopia.com/index.asp?PageAct...mp;ProdID=33039Hopefully this will take care of things for now on. BillAileo
That looks like the one IPD used to sell (for a lot more) before they started carrying the present flimsy version. I have one and it works fine.Bill

MadeInJapan
I can pull mine by hand.. but I am superman so... Well I can't...the thing must be encased with kryptonite. I'm wondering if I should send IPD back their piece of crap filter wrench just so they'll see how lousy it is? I don't want them to send me a new one, but credit towards their other products would be nice.

If so I am buying one from the link you posted. I use a paper towel folded a couple of times then push the cap style socket over the filter. At any rate the filter should only be hand tight and a quarter turn anyway.

Everything changed for all volvo's necessitating this wrench from '99 on. Yeah, I tried the paper towel too...just that the weld broke on the wrench where they spot weld the square socket hole on....this is the second one in 3 oil changes that didn't work for me. I got tired of the cheap knock-off, so I bought this more substantial filter wrench- really for not much more than the crappy one.You say hand tighten...may work, but specs call for 26.5 ft. lbs...which is more than what I can tighten by hand- unless you're the guy who posted above and have super-human powers. All the filters except the one on my airplane I always have tightend hand tight and a quarter turn. Same with the canister filters on MBZ desiels. ( My harley has a canister filter but not sure about it's specs yet. The bike only has 266 miles on it.) Needless to say I will not be buying a filter socket from IPD or FCP though. Can you let me know what IPD says when you send the one that you bought from them back?

Next time, I'll try it by hand and see if it leaks.
Fisher
Yeah, its the o-ring that seals, no matter how tight it is. All you have to do is bottom out the plastic cover on the block.

MadeInJapan
Can you let me know what IPD says when you send the one that you bought from them back?I called them today. Since it was less than a year ago I can return it for a new one (or since in my case I have a better one and don't want their crappy one) or store credit...they must know that it will cost me about the same to send it back to them as what I paid for it. Shnitz....no biggie. It was cheap enough anyway. The guys I work with have broken at least 5 of those, make your own using my description and pic to be posted in the future.Yes, please post it up. I don't have welding equipment accessable to me, but I'm still curious.
