2000 V70r Friction Type Noise In Sync With Wheel Rotation

2000 V70R with 140000km.

The problem started with an intermittent noise coming from the front driver wheel or driver axle shaft area. The noise was present at low and high speeds basically in sync with the wheel rotation so when the car stops the noise stops. The noise is there sometimes for a minute or so and then disappear and after a while appears again, very annoying. The sound is there even if I put the car in neutral. It sounds like a rotating part is rubbing against a fix part. I don't think is the wheel bearing because this would be kind of a low frequency noise, my one is more like a buzzing noise. So what I did I put the car on a ramp and looking underneath I saw that the driver front axle "bearing box" (I am not sure of the name of that part) has rubbing signs against the transmission housing. I took a picture and the link is below.

Circle 1 in the picture shows where the bearing box is touching the transmission housing and circle 2 shows the rubbing sign.

I am not sure why this happens I found that the bolt that is holding the axle on the center of the wheel was kind of loose so I tightened it but the noise is still there pretty much all the time when the car rolls... Any ideas would be really appreciated.

Thanks.

Unfortunately is getting ugly...

One mechanic told me that there is some play where the axle enters the transmission because he believes the side bearing is gone... But this is part of the transmission so it looks like the tranny has to be replaced....I am really mad...I am waiting for the dealer to come with a second opinion.

I think Volvo developed a fix for this exact problem or at least to prevent it. I'd say ask the dealer about a fix for drive shaft play. Other than that it doesn't sound cheap.... unfortunately.

The fix is top stop up and down play in the drive shaft...
