Cad Software And Volvos

SkyWriter

ok, this is very geeky. but the 4 page PDF shows two volvo's modeled by SGI workstations (with software that lot's of people use of course). the model on page 2 looks almost like the new S80 V8, but the hoodlines are wrong. and page 4 shows a convertible!

i've seen stuff like that done on AutoDesk Inventor... mad skills were involved, the guy made a fully functional SAE Formula 1 car, literally everything worked, you move the gear selector and the gears changed, everything, tires, tach, speedo, suspension, and engine... he put in tons of hours with a few of his friends as a senior design project. the most i've done on AutoDesk Inventor was a 5 speed gear box design and it took forever.

They both look like C70's to me. Page 2 only has 2 doors. Someone must really like the C70 hardtop convertible.

ah, you're right... funny i drive by one parked at school when i drop my kid off everyday and it didn't click... tomorrow i'll look closer!

excellent! i still have 3 indigo2's, some octanes, indys, origin2000's, onyx2... even a freeking SkyWriter (yes the name comes from a computer model, geeked)

I'm sooo jealous!! The "Origin" form factor was my fav (same as the Crimson and Onyx). I used an Onyx back in 1996 to do my CAD project and the graphics power was unbelievable. I gave up using a Pentium PC because it would take forever to execute the 'hide' command in AutoCAD. The Onyx did it in one second. There was a Crimson with a Reality Engine in that same visualization lab, which I wanted to steal....LOL

OK and where the hell do you store all those machines at home? The Origins, Onyxs and Octanes aren't compact computers ya know!

The only SGI left in my possession is the 1600SW Display you see here. I gave the Indigo2 away because I had to keep my computer hardware numbers under control.

and the glorious age of crimsons :) Elan, VGX, and Reality Engine (with MCO not shown)

also have some O2's and a quad processor origin200 with two disk racks... :pizza:

i've done a lot of hunting for Cray, Convex, Maspar, and stuff. but the SGI's were something that you could actually use.

i don't get to do much with them anymore though... oh well, they were an adventure to collect though, especially those big boys!

Oooo...that is a setup to die for.

I get all nostalgic when I see Crimsons. Did you know there was one in the movie, Jurassic Park?

I have a soft spot for mini computers. At one time I considered hunting down a Apple Network server 700 and using it

as a internal fileserver. But eversince I got my IBM Netfinity, I haven't looked at anything else.
