irf
hey guys, hope somebody can help me, i've noticed in the last couple of days that my steerings whining. not just lock to lock, which is the only thing that came up in any searches but just normal driving or even at a standstill.not sure if it happens when its warm cos i've only done short journeys in the last couple of days.it's the same kind of noise that you get with any power steered car when you put it on full lock and you hear that whining kind of sound but this just happens literally when the steering is moved off centre.checked the resovoir and the level is fine, the fluid quite dark and some bubbles in there as well. read on one of the searches thatpower steering fluid could be the cause of bubbles as our cars dont use powersteering fluid but ATF. is that correct?any help appreciated guys, thanks. matt b
anyone?Yes, we use ATF, not power steering fluid. Bubbles are not a good sign, it should be a sealed system, bubbles may also indicate a leak. Off the top of my head, and remembering my VW days, I'd think you have a bad pump. If you're running PS fluid and not ATF, you may have damaged the pump (the whine) and it could be leaking (the bubbles).

ShadeTek
If you are hearing a noise, only when you turn the steering wheel, it is more than likely it is air in the system being forced through the pump. This, as stated, usually means your fluid level is low. I would look under your car for leaks, especially at the gators for signs of a leak. 850drag
air bubbles means you have air in the system. take a vaccum pump and pump the air out of the system, or take your p/s fluid cap off and top you fluid off and turn your wheel from side to side until the p/s noise goes away. Check for leaks around any of you p/s hoses also.
