'93 Thermostat Housing On A 96 R?

Hi all,

Well the R is currently not on the road due to me repainting bumpers and the wheels.

Anywho I thought I would check the fluids etc in an idle moment and oh dear

I think I have coolant in the oil - possible head gasket so I was looking at what was needed and how easy/or not it is all going to be when I noticed that my thermostat housing is different from any other that I have seen on an 850.

Is this off a 93 850?. I checked out FCP and there are two different coolant overflow lines one for a 93 which seems like it would fit mine, and one for all others 94 +. Also the coolant tank is different for a 93 on FCP.

I also noticed that when I replaced my serp belt and tensioner that it was not the right tensioner for a 96 :(

Two things.

1) Will having this housing etc harm my motor? i.e cause too much pressure etc.

2) What has been done to my block? (you cannot answer this its hypothetical).

I will be running a compression test sometime over the next fortnight to try and confirm my worst fears.

Th only difference on my 93 and yours is that the coolant tank/reservoir actually goes to the top of the top housing of the thermostat.

I cant see the pic of that area.. but it would appear that your fefill tube goes directly to the radiator.

I would think as long as your cooling system has the capability to vent and at the same time get more fluids .. its good to go!

Mine is a non turbo.. perhaps you can see if some turbos are different.

The overflow line is the top most in the picture above.

You can see that it comes from the coolant tank and loops back around under the hose to the radiator.

Here is another view from in front looking beside the PS pump

This is with me lifting the radiator hose. You can see the overflow line and the temp sensor

So your 93 goes to the top of the housing huh. wonder what the hell I have then.

So nobody has seen this setup

That thermostat housing is from 2000 s70 and a few other models use the same one, it is on the later models and not really meant for the way are engines are set up that is why your line runs along the top instead of being partially hidden. The previous owner must have gotten some wrong parts at the junkyard

Oh dear - it really is a mixed bag then. Do you know if this would increase the pressure or cause problems(like loose me a bit of coolant over time).

It looks like the housing you have has the reservoir tank line going into the actual t-stat housing itself on the head, and not into the t-stat housing cap like most 850's have. If that's the case and all else is the same then really the only difference would be that your reservoir line to the tank is below the t-stat and not above it. I just don't see how that matters and doubt it could cause you any issues, but then again I'm not a Volvo engineer ... nor do I play one on the internet ;) . Our coolant systems are closed loop btw and don't have an overflow setup.
