2001 C70 Coupe

Just want to know what I'd have to deal with. I don't want to use the stock amp. I don't mind the stock HU, but would prefer to just toss a bunch of MP3s on a disc.

My problem currently with it, is something happened to the amp. My stereo isn't producing very crisp high-end anymore. Too much of a bass-ey song causes it to stink like fried electronics, even with a relatively low volume setting. The center channel does high-end just fine, but has always sounded terrible, and I never used it. I don't care about surround sound either, as it's retarded for music.

I know I'd need an amp, all the goodies involved, and a new HU. What I want to know is what kind of amp(how many channels?) to power all the speakers. Dynaudio is good, and when my amp was working the stereo sounded clearer than my friends $2k aftermarket job(I don't want to waste time replacing speakers that work great)

Also, I hate paying people for doing things I can do myself. I would prefer, however, to have some labeled wiring kit of some sort. I was able to get a labled wiring kit for my 780 and I'd imagine there's one for the C70. The wiring kit is also because I've constantly got my eye out for the possibility of trading the Coupe in towards a new R, but as of yet, no one has given me a good enough deal. I'd like to be able to swap the stock crap back in easily.

So suggestions, comments, insults?

No suggestions eh? :(

Are you sure it's the amp?

Sounds like you may have blown the tweeters...

Usually when an amp takes a dump, it goes all the way. Usually...

And remember, if the music sounds distorted...TURN IT DOWN!

Roll back the bass, lower the volume, do something!

When the music sounds distorted, Your speakers are being killed!

Tweeters often go first with abuse.

If you want a louder sound, build a louder system...

The core Dynaudio sounds like a great system, ( haven't actually heard one, yet)

but I'd guess that it lacks the bass you'd like. You might consider fixing

it and adding a good sub/sub amp combo to the stock system.

Then just sell the car with a blastin' "Value Added" system.

Rock on, but practice Safe Sound!

Good equipment is expensive, man...

I thought it might have been the tweeters at first too. But every tweeter except the center channel? The music wasn't loud and the bass wasn't really pumping either. When the high end went, it faded in and out. Kept going back and forth. I thought it was the CD I was listening to. I don't think tweeters will blow, repair and then blow again. Ontop of that, I keep smelling burning metal from time to time.

That and the car has 4 subs. Two eights in the doors and two nines on the hat shelf if I am not mistaken. It is set up to perform quite well in the audio department.

I know its a stupid question... but you did try adjusting the equalizer right?

Ooooh yeah. I did, it was the only thing that makes it sound good enough to listen to. The biggest pain in the jerk(wtf, butt's more vulgar brother is filtered?) is the fact that it's all under warrantee and the dealer won't take care of it. I found out about the equalizer after this happened too :-( . I bet I could have prevented this from happening, by getting rid of the terrible stock curve. The amp(or something) is constantly causing my car to smell like burnt electronics now too.

That is pretty weird. Your options are pretty much new stock amp or new deck/amp. However its gonna be hard to find an amp that'll put out the proper proportions for the C70s audio set-up. Unless you wanna replace everything.... which will end up being a pretty expensive endeavor. The whole 13 speaker this is great when it works but a biotch when its f'up.

burnt electronics?! eep!

The amp is located in the trunk, driver's side with the little pocket. (Behind it) Does the smell get stronger there?

If so, maybe your amp is burning out.

With the Sc900 series, you have several options of 2 Channel, Dolby, and 3ch (or something very similar) have you tried changing those to see if they have any effect?

The center channel speaker when used in ECH mode sounds fine(and improves quality in sound). Which is why I think it's the amp. The center channel is powered by the HU. This would be semi acceptable, but the center channel has been blown since I bought the car. I never used it so I never cared. Until now.

Im lost. IIRC the sc900 series does not power any of the speakers. You have the Sc900 unit / Dolby Prologic processor / Alpine 400watt Amp. The center channel is connected to the dolby thing, and once you disconnect the dolby, you no longer have the center channel.

Which mode(s) work, and which dont?

Jesus, sorry I'm getting back to this so late, I've been spending too much time with the 'tone.

I actually have the high end system, with the 901. According to a PDF I downloaded off some European Volvo site, the center channel is powered by the HU. The rest by the amp. I still have the PDF at work. It had part numbers and explanations of everything. Those Euro bastards even got an auxilary jack in the 901  .

It went to the dealer recently and I had them listen to it again. It's still under warrantee, but they're not going to do a damn thing about it.

All of the modes work. It's just every speaker but the center channel does not produce high end. I don't hear symbols in songs. Everything sounds really really flat, asside from the pannel rattling bass it produces.

I've gotten around the bass problem by using the equalizer, and made, what should be, a clear but powerful curve. No dice though, sounds like butt. Now I would assume that an amp being borked would cause it to not have lots of bass, but I have been informed that if the amp isn't working properly, it is possible it can't hit the high end frequencies.

I'm half tempted to try to find a wrecked c70 somewhere and gank it's amp, just to test it. My other plan is to try to use an oscilloscope and make sure e verything is hitting with the right levels.

I really wish I knew about the equalizer BEFORE the stereo went South.

At this point, its trial and error. Good Luck with finding a c70 amp. Let us know if it fixes it
