Guest volvowizard
Hello i will be joining this site soon but my question is i need to know what the difference between the Volvo Sc-815(black-faced) and Sc-816(gray-faced). I have done reseach on the web and obviusly the faceplates are a slightly different color except for some black faced sc-816 they put in some models. The other threads on other message boards say the black-faced sc-816 is an upgrade for the 850's Sc-815. They also say the wattage is different between the sc-815 at 4x20 watts v.s. Sc-816 at 4x25. Please tell me if any of this info is true or are they both the same wattage. I need the true specs being as i am going to a junkyard soon and want to get the better of the 2 for my 850. Thanks
paulr
Those wattage numbers seem right (someone else may know for sure, I don't). However, I personally wouldn't put too much time or money into it - you're going to have to track down the radio code for that unit, which is dependent on the vehicle's VIN, or by taking apart the radio. There's no guarantee that unit will work well, either. I don't know what a yard charges for a HU, but rather good after marketunits can be had in the ~$120 range, brand-new, with better sound quality, and about equal power - not to mention looks and features of your choosing. If however, maintaining a Volvo HU is important to you (for appearance or whatever), then I would think the 816 is a better choice.
Figawi
i put the SC-816 black face in all of my 850s and haven't had any sound issues.
paulr
Yes, compared to some OEM units the Volvo CD player ones aren't BAD. However, I'm just saying I wouldn't put too much time and money into locating one unless there's another reason. People do upgrade their stick units to aftermarket ones all the time, both for the SQ and features. And, reminding him to write down the VIN or look for the radio code, because the resistor tricks can be a PITA, and I can't remember off the top of my head if they even work off the 816... It'd really suck if he spend 2 or 3 hours looking for the damn thing, spent $50 to get it, and then didn't have the code. Just my $.02.
RAzOR
To be honest, I think they will both sound the same. Get the one that looks better.
r850glt
SC 815 & SC 816 are available in both Black & grey face, Same Specs only difference is SC 816 has updated Changer mechanism which has been improved over SC 815, the SC 816 has a button on the Side that allows it to be ejected when A CD is stuck. I would take a SC816 over a SC
