M66 Cables - Help Me Verify

Recommended Posts

Guys, I have to make hybrid shifter cables to mate the M66 to an 850 shifter. The ball-socket connectors are different sizes so... I have the M66 trans and M66 (S60R) shifter cables. I am going to have to cut the cable near the shifter and mate 850 shifter type connectors so I can connect the cables to the shifter. Get it?

Anyway, the only thing I have a picture of is the shifter cable assy for an M56. Can someone confirm for me if this is the same basic setup for the M66? I am pretty sure (99.9999%) that it is the same, but I need to confirm 100% BEFORE I cut the cables. Can anyone confirm with a pic or something? Thanks.

I figured I would throw this up here too. The cables for the M66 are different diameter than the 850 ones. Therefore I had to cut a slot into the shifter housing assy to fit/mount the cable in there to keep it stable. The other cable will need to be secured via the plastic housing that sits in front of the shifter assy. Check it!

Some one help me out here.

Thanks.

How about using an M66 shifter?

The one thing I do know, the shifter assy comes pretty accurate. Had the cables replaced on both my R's and it needed fine adjustment which appeared to be tricky.

Johann - The shifter assy for the M66 has completely different mounting holes and a wider base. It won't fit.

I am thinking of cutting the cable and then threading the ends and using a turnbuckle to connect the two. That way, I can adjust the length as needed. Thoughts?

Brand new - ran me $800 shipped. But you're not going to find another deal like that again. I heard they run $2800-3200 new but un-confirmed. I know of one in a junk yard with 2K miles on it for $1200.

How about the shifter mechanism? not similar to the old mechanism? Is there a way to put it in the older base?

Could work, the older cables have ~3" clear cable before it connects to the shifter. I think M6 should fit or a US equivalent.

Completely different diameters, etc. I will try to take a picture later today and post it.

Yeah - I have to look today at both assys, etc. Another thought it to weld the ball connector off the M66 shifter onto the 850 shifter, but that does no solve the length/adjustment issue. I just have to figure out all of the measurements, etc. before I start cutting

U'll need the S60 shifter cause the m66 has 6 gears not five.

No no no... the shifters are not gated, they are free floating. In other words, if you disconnect the shifter cables, the shifter just flops around unlike other some other assys that have gates built into the shifter.

Even Seamus used his stock shifter but he needed custom cables.

M56 and M66 alike.
