BlackBeast
Want to get rid of the electronic climate control, but not sure how to go about it.How do I go about depressurising the system from fluid or whatever is in there?Did the 70 series cars come without any aircon at all? If so, does anyone have one of those cars, that can take a picture of the back of the heater control unit? Im guessing that I would have to put a non air con control in there, but I need a pic of the back so i can see if they have the same plugs. Thats it for now I think.I know about Johann's guide, but need the above info aswell as he did it on a normal A/C car.
echristodo
what is prompting this? you trying to loose weight on the car or you just hate ac?
BlackBeast
A/C doesnt go cold, its never gone cold since ive owned the car. You dont miss what you've never had. Also want to make some room by the rads.

Evil E
IMO you are missing the point of modding a Volvo, as opposed to say a Mustang, by removing the A/C.
fromtheshadows
Yeah and gaining 5-10hp all over, losing some weight, and making room for better cooling would suck too. Dont listen to the haters man get rid of all that pansy junk.
2404life
I would just release the r-134 refridgerant into the atmosphere, not exactly EPA approved, but it's fine. Don't huff it because that would be bad. Otherwise you have to have a machine to recapture it. Open the line and let it bleed!
BlackBeast
lol thanks ashman, dont really understand evil's comment, maybe an US thing i dont know As for gaining 5-10bhp, very doubtfull, but the rest are true.Think i shall go for it anyway, and what ever problems arise with the ECC heater controls, i'll just have to live with it until I find a solution. fromtheshadows
You should gain some power, how much is hard to say. IDK about the US thing, I live in Cali also and as long as I stay by the water theres no problem My wife is the only one who would complain, and her car is the one WE take when we go out, we stopped taking my car after the suspension and 3inch exhaust was installed. As for the controls, just leave it on heat, I dont think there should be a problem as long as the AC isnt on. Are you eliminating the heater core too? You can eliminate the AC and keep the heat and dont worry about the climate control, if the AC isnt on it shouldnt matter.Could be wrong... echristodo
It would be easier to make it work that it would be to remove the whole thing. When it works it is a pretty useful feature, not only do you get cold air but it also pulls all the moisture out of your cabin so it doesnt always smell like ass. Heater core will still be there.
narxs70
even if your a/c system had no compressor, it would still blow air out of the system, it would just be cooled air from the refrigerant in the system. if you remove the compressor, you will pick up power because of the rotating mass lost from the compressor spinning. you will need a different belt or an idler like Johann has on his car. The AC is integrated into several systems in the carand I have a funny feeling that after you open this can of worms, you will regret it. There is no significanthorsepower advantage. Minimal. Get a Hot ECU if you want some more bang. It's a "big picture" thing. And the AC is SUPPOSED to be on in defrost mode. Getting the moisture out of the car is PART of defrosting. Why go backwards? If you don't have it turned on, it doesn't crank the compressor. "Rotating mass"? Gimme a break! Is this a race car or a daily driver? Want muscle? Get the Mustang...'Bout a 68...428 Cobrajet.Spend just a little cash, recharge the system and pat yourself on the back your next foggy day. Then give yourself a medal on the next baking hot day.Dude...Keep it! Just my opinion, I could be wrong...
MrLorence
This is a bad trick for modern cars, maybe if your running a 70's gremlin then I would do it..
