Why leary because of those repairs?

I bought my 850 and S90, partly due to each Carfax showing regular service and repairs. I figured that was the best thing being they have been kept up where a lot of stuff that could fail on me later was already taken care of. I guess there's two ways to look at it though.

I agree with everyone on the S80 thing. Given the tranny, electrical system and seals etc., definately not the most reliable, feasible Volvo to buy. This is even pretty well known and why so many of them are out there for sale used and cheap.

I'd say 850 or an 850 turbo if you are looking for a turbo. or 960 (S90), if you don't mind not having a turbo and like RWD. 960/S90 will end up likely being the "most" solid and trouble free though (more like the traditional Volvos). 850T is faster, more sporty and fun to drive.

Something else to keep in mind is that a Carfax will also often even reflect oil changes performed by certain dealers and transmission fluid changes. These will be listed as "lube service" and "transmission service", I believe. Had a bunch of them also listed in my vehicle history reports, which was another factor in my own purchases.

With any vehicle though, it is still very important to find one that was well taken care of, hopefully with some proof.

Take a look at your local autotrader or vehix listings and you'll see that used T6 goes for way less than the non turbo S80. And it's a so-called premium feature. That should be a red flag. The transmission and engine were a bad pair on this car and you are taking a risk. I had one for a year and it was a nightmare.

good luck.

I have had a S80 for a little over two and a half years now. I think the only major thing I have had to spend was $500 to fix the ETM. Volvo later reimbursed me for this spenditure later on, slightly before the recall. I changed the plugs every 30,000 and changed the oil by myself. This being said I think the car is very reliable and very well built. I don't think there are too many cars that require no maintenaince in two years.

I would also disagree with saying that you can't do your own work on the car. I have worked on serveral cars in the past. I don't think that this car is any harder to fix than the others. Its just like any car built after the year 2000. Actually, when I think of the Chevys and Dodges I fixed I see much better engineering in the Volvo.

As far as the price I think it is a good deal. I check on the value of my s80 from time to time. The turbo models cost a little more than the non-turbo models though. I always look at Carsoup.com it is a quick way to look at cars.

The only thing that I don't know anything about is the turbo. My car is the 2.9 which is the non-turbo. I now have 115,000 miles on the car too and it is running good.
