Hilton
I never noticed this before and am concened. I can see the head through the hole in the cam retainer. Is this broken? My engine looks like it's taken a bath in oil.We drank some wine last night. I may just stick a cork in it. :)

ArmyINFDoc
Looks like the hole for the PCV pipe.the pvc hose goes onto a small raised hole and is clamped on it. it doesnt go into a hole
RussB
My 850 Turbi has that hole, as do all 850 turbo's.No oil comes out of mine. I rekon that motor oil is leaking out the PVC connection and/or oil filler cap, and getting all over you cam cover, and some oil is gone into that hole, not out of it. Hilton
I don't think it's coming from the pcv system, and I replaced the oil cap rubber about a week ago. There's so much oil spilled that it's difficult to tell from where it came. I'm going to clean it up and see if I can find the problem. I probably forgot to connect something. RussB
I don't think it's coming from the pcv system, and I replaced the oil cap rubber about a week ago.Well, there's only 2 places for the oil to come from...the PCV system connection, and the oil filler cap. And you may have spilled some oil there to while filling up the oil
Madtown850
you could have oil leaking from various bolts that hold the cam cover to the lower head section. When you put your head back together did you use the volvo high temp liquid sealant and did you apply it carefully/adequately(it actually doesn't take much) to the cam cover. I was just talking to a volvo tech yesterday at the local dealership and asked him if grey rtv sealant would work between the cam cover and lower head. He said only for a short period of time and then oil would start leaking out of the bolts and your engine would get real messy. Just an Idea. Hilton
I think you are correct. I called Mike this evening and he said the same thing. For future reference, the sealant is anaerobic in nature and part number 1161059Thanks for your help again guys.
Madtown850
yup, the tech said that the sealant would not set up until it was between the two metal surfaces, which is an anaerobic environment. Unlike regular grey RTV, which will start setting up immediately, and therfore the seal may be compromised before the cam cover even goes on. Good luck, BTW the stuff costs 37.00 a tube from the dealer, I was able to get them down 20%.
