Wiring Harness Trouble

I bought a wiring harness for my 89 740. They are all supposed to be the same through 92. When I pulled my radio though, this is what I found. The company I bought it from says they have never seen anyhitng like this before, and maybe it has been changed in the past. It is still the factory radio, the exact same one I have in my 1987 740, and it had to correct plug. So, what si up with this one, and where can I find a harness to fit it?

Also, there was a round plug too, as you can kinda see in the pic. For the factory amp????

that is kinda strange, that definetly doenst look like a pre 92 volvo harness...is that the thing that came out of the back of the radio? or its coming out of the car.

do you see signs that someone may have added this harness? if you cant figure it out, you may just have to figure out the wiring code and hardwire it...:(

That's a pretty standard RWD harness from what I have experienced. It is only the power side of the harness though, all the speakers will be plugged into an external amp (the round plug) and that amp is more than likely in 1 of 3 places. Behind the glovebox (alot of older 200's) below all the climate stuff right behind that console on the floor (alot of the newer 200's) or I have heard alot of the 700's are in the dash on the drivers side somewhere. That is where your speaker wires that you will need to splice will be. What harness do you have now?

it didnt look like hte metra harness for pre 92 volvos, i thought that one was a bit narrower and taller...

as for 850 harnesses, do you mean this is the wider of the two harnesses usually comes in the metra adapater?

This is the one that I bought

Volvo Harness

The 850 has the same plug, but the contacts in it are different (already check it out).

So do I need to find the amp and bypass it or what? Will my speakers work without the amp? I had a place install my one on the other 740, and they said somehitng about an amp. But that was a long time ago, and they're not around. I don't really like taking my car to have it touched by others....

yeah, that what I thought the pre 92 volvo plug looked like, more squarish...

so you know for usre you have an amp? cuase if not, just hardwire it...do it cleanly, find out which wire does what coming out of that harness, and just tap into it directly.

I'm pretty sure my 940 had that exact same harness. The power wires are throug that plug, then there should be another harness under the dash, with the factory amp, that would be the speaker wires. The round thing could be the antenna or the amp.

potroast, yeah same on my old 940 actually.

I figured out that only the power wires are coming though that plug, no speaker wires....  Sooo, anyone know for sure where the amp is hidden?

I have an '87 740 too. What people are referring to about bypassing the amp is because if you hook up a wiring harness from the plug in the back of the radio to the new CD receiver, then you will only be able to hear through 2 speakers, not 4.

I have heard of bypassing amplifier harnesses, but they are pretty expensive compared to the regular ones ($45 vs. $5).

In order to rewire around the amp manually, you have to cut the amp wires and essentially bypass it manually by reconnecting to what comes out of the radio. I might be missing a step here, but that is the general idea.

The only downfall about this rewiring is that if you want to go back to using the amp with a cassette/radio, you have to go through this all over again.

I forgot to mention. The amp is right under the steering wheel. Look underneath the wheel, there is a plastic piece that unscrews. Two screws one on top right, and the other on top left. Slid this out and look up, and there is a big amp, a bit bigger than the size of a din radio. It's bulky, but not too hard to navigate around.
