Replace Engine Mounts Or Not?

Hey folks B)

According to Volvo in Dallas, and my independent Volvo mechanic, it's time to change the lower engine mounts. I realize that worn out mounts could damage the engine in the long run if not replaced. The thing is that I feel no vibrations what so ever, which would be a clear indication of failed mounts. Should I still change them? I actually already ordered all three lower mounts from FCP Groton, but am now wondering if I may have rushed it a bit?

It's a 1998 S70 T5 with 106k mi. on it btw..

At that mileage, unless the hydrolic mounts were busted (you would see fluid stains on the subframe), it be hard to say if they would be bad. The passenger side mount, it is completely possible it needs replacement, but then again you would feel that.

It's really going to be your call because no one can really see what kind of condition they are in. If you do decide to replace them, I would return the FCP mounts and purchase OEM. You may pay more for OEM, but the MTC mounts FCP sells are not that great and do not have the longevity like OEM.

I believe you can do a visual inspection to see if they are broken (check Bay13), so there should be no guess work on if they need replacing. If they are not broken or show symptoms, I would not replace. I have a '98 T5 with 122k and mine are still fine (I have repalced the top mount a few times which is very easy DIY).

Generally the hydraulic mounts are very durable and rarely fail even at higher mileages unless you can visibly see one is collapsed (flattened looking). If a hydraulic mount is shot I'd have to believe you'd definately feel some vibration.

In most cases the side mount as mentioned, upper engine torque rod and lower tranny torque rod are the mounts that go and need to be replaced.

On ebay there is a company called Deutsch parts that sells a pair of the hydraulic mounts. I was extremely skeptical but bought a pair for $79.00.

I researched them and they were exactly Identical to the Corteco Fruedenburg mounts Volvo sells leading me to believe they are the same. They've worked great so far to and I believe they are the same.

One way to tell if your right side motor mount is bad is if you start your car you here a knocking noise right when its done revving up... this is only when it is SHOT... I had this happen to me two days ago, replaced it and everything was fine!

Are you sure FCP's engine mounts aren't OEM? They claim to be so..

No kiddin huh. I've had this problem since I bought the car. Asked a while back, and people said motor mounts, but we never really determined which one. I just never got around to figurin it out. I got a hard metallic clank/clunk right on a hard shift usually, and it will happen once more the second i even tap the brake pedal. Sound like my passenger side is on the way out?

That sounds like you dont even have a motor mount there... they are very easy to check though, just remove the wheel and lift up the plastic flap and you will see it right to the left of the pully. Or you can look under the car and if the mount is shot the engine will most likly sit a little below the subframe tab right behind the oil pan on the passangers side. When the mount is good it will likly sit slightly above that tab.

Guys, I am still not sure what to do

I just got the mounts I ordered from FCP (the 2 hyd's and the lower right). After reading your replies and also doing some more research on this forum and other sites I can't make up my mind of what to do. Can someone confirm taht the ones from FCP are NOT OEM, despite saying so on their site. Some ppl here say OEM is the ONLY way to go when it comes to eng. mounts. As for the lower right I have been looking at these;

QBM: $70

VIVA. $70

IPD: honestly can't remember

MySwedishParts.com: $102 (OEM)

Volvo of Dallas: $117

With the help from the installation guide I'm pretty sure even I can handle it myself, so it's just a matter of getting the best part.

Since I'm not sure if I can master changing the the two hyd's (F & R) myself I called Firestone Auto Repair and they will get the mounts straight from Volvo, but only charge $167 for the labor changing the two. Big difference from the the $900 quote I got from Volvo on parts & labor for all three mounts.

The thing that really makes me unsure is the fact, as I initally posted, I feel NO vibrations. I don't feel like changing the mounts and then for some reason end up WITH vibrations. What is the worst that can happen, except for vibrations, if I don't change them now?

The guy at Volvo (not a mech) said if the mounts are collapsed and the engine drops low enough I am running the risk the oilpan hitting a road bump and go bust. To me that sounds like it would have to be a mighty big bump for this to happen. I am running on the stock suspension, so not lowered.

Should I simply return the FCP mounts, like one member advices me to, and get something better since it's not an emergency at the moment?

Please help me make up my mind..

If they look exactly like these, they are Corteco Fruedenburg, which is the same Volvo would sell you at more than twice the cost. If they are the same, probably just distributed by another company such as HT Germany (Hamburg Technic), MTC or Scantech and not actually made by one of those companies so I wouldn't worry

For the side mount DO NOT USE MTC, SCANTECH OR ANY OTHER POS BRAND. USE ONLY FEBI or Corteco Fruedenburg. This mount must be OE spec because in many cases if not it will cause excess vibration or problems. Check thepartsbin.com or eeuroparts.com for this mount.

If you're going through all this trouble make sure the top firewall mount has been replaced within the last 50K or you should do that too. If I were you I'd start with the side mount, top torque rod mount and lower torque rod mount unless the hydraulics are collapsed. You can do ALL of those yourself if you can change a set of spark plugs.

For my hydraulic mounts, dealer charged $300 to do them while I supplied the parts, a local Goodyear Shop that does service and repairs told me they couldn't even do it. One of the hydraulics looked like a PITA so I just let the dealer do those, I did the others myself no problem.

They are motor mounts people!!!!... replace them or dont... simple as that. If i were you i wouldnt touch the things inless i saw that they were 100% toasted and likely on your car they are not. The hydraulic mounts are the LAST to go.

But since you already have the mounts then just throw them on...

Well, this person is rightfully being cautious not wanting to unknowingly drop a crappy aftermarket motor mounts in.

There are cheap aftermarket mounts out there that DO NOT perform to OE spec and can lead to excessive vibration and premature failure. It's good to know what you have is OE quality or not before going through the trouble to replace them.

I absolutely agree, hydraulics are last to go, problems are usually do to the other 3 mounts, which should always be replaced first unless the hydraulics are collapsed or the first 3 don't take care of the issue.
